Pt has hypernatremia boz of dehydrated adn malnourished, what to give? 1) Oral wather administration 2) IV 0.9% saline 3) IV 5% D/W (dextrose in water) 4) IV colloid and 0.9% saline 5) IV distilled water

Hypernatremia with dehydration should be treated with isotonic (0.9%) saline to restore the volume deficit and to treat the hyperosmolality, since the osmolality of isotonic saline is often lower than that of the plasma.

Answer is 3. boz pt is hypernatremia from dehydrated and also pt is malnourished.

hi.i dont think it is 3,think doc4mindia is right.u cant use d/w to correct dehydration,it doesnt stay in circulation and wont expand volume.

The appropriate practice would be D5W+0.45%NS, or D5W+0.9%NS, the principle is can't correct serum sodium more than 10 per day. answer 2 is better than 3. 3 is a little risky for demylination.
