A 5 y/o male is brought to ER by his mother complainig of headache and fever. His parent were concern with the child's frequent diarrhea and elevated body temperature.Symptoms began approx 2 days previous. the Parent report that children at a daycare center where the child attends were similsrly ill. stool was collected for culture; examined for WBC; had a rapid virus antigen test performed on it, and an ova and parasite examination. A CBC count was within normal limits. The patien was not acutly ill and was discharged with supportive care instruction provided to the parents. The stool culture was subsequently reported out as negative for bacterial enteric pathogens. The stool was negative for WBC.The ova and parasite examination was negative. The rapid virus antigen test was however positive. The causative agent of this patient's gastroenteritis is a DNA virus that is 70 nm in diameter. The most probable cause of this patient's gastroenteritis is (A) Adenovirus (B) Rotavirus (C) Parvovirus (D) Norwalk virus (E) Hepatitis A

And rotavirus is RNA virus. Adeno and Parvo are the only DNA viruses listed.

The answer is a. adenovirus of the two DNA viruses on the list it is the only one to cause gastroenteritis...specifically adenovirus serotypes 40 and 41. The other dna virus...parvovirus causes fifth disease, aplastic anemia in sickle cell px and hydrops fetalis...but, not gastroenteritis. It is true that rotavirus causes gastroenteritis in children especially those < 2 years old...but, it is an RNA virus.
