due to overwhelming inflamatory response. Basically body kills itself, trying to rid itself of the virus.

Let me correct your question... this is indirect effect, since it takes one agent to have body pick on another agent. The resp failure due to overwhelming immune respomse is in fact the most direct way to die of the flu.
The only reason I went on to answer the question is coz I realized you were trying to ask about superinfection.
No offense, just wanted to get clear on that.
