hi,
i have a real trouble in learning from Kaplan Pediatrics ... can some one suggest

alternative and simple book or review notes for Pediatrics.

thanks

I came on this thread while I was searching the forum.

I totally agree, Kaplan pediatrics is probably the worst book in the whole series. It is difficult to handle, and I haven't been able to achieve a good grasp on it.

I really need a good and easy alternative to this book, or else pediatrics will be the Achilles heel in my CK preparation.

Me to can also join this club dr. desperate....

Can anyone tell us any other source for peds or we are stuck with Kaplan???

Thanks!

In my case I believe that Kaplan notes were overkill for peds. I personally used a combo of First Aid, Boards and Wards to quickly review Peds. Then do all UW questions. If your prep for internal medicine is solid then you should not worry much about pediatrics. After all peds is internal medicine of the children !

But if you are the type that worries too much or got real bad scores in peds in med school I would suggest flipping through Kaplan notes quickly and start doing Qs. Qs are the key guys. They are the only way to consolidate your knowledge and make it more accessible when needed.

GL all

Pediatrics Kaplan Notes didn't help me alot when i'm doing UW. It lacks a proper coverage of SYNDROMES AND IMMUNODEFICIENCY topics. I spent quite a time reviewing these pediatric kaplan notes and ended up as i'm harvesting on the sea. It doesn't give enough clues to make a diagnosis, i.e too much redundency.

Sounds like I need to list these SYNDROMES AND IMMUNODEFICIENCY topics and rehearse them everyday ..

And about Alternative Resources ? my opinion will be obtained from such examples :

Kaplan Notes : Delayed separation of umbilical cord think about Chronic Granulomatous Dz
UW : Delayed separation of umbilical cord think about Leukocyte adhesion def.

Kaplan Notes : You can use aspirin and steroids for Kawasaki dz
Boards & wards : It's contraindicated to use aspirin and steroids in Kawasaki dz

What do you think ?

wow... shocked
The only indication of aspirine in pediatric population is Kawasaki disease.
Anyone mastering this?raised eyebrow

Delayed separation of the umbilical cord (omphalitis) is a sign for Leukocyte Adhesion Deficiency, while recurrent infection of catalase positive germs is frequently seen in Chronic Granulomatous Disease.

What about aspirin in Kawasaki???

Thanks!

  #16

yes kawasaki is the only indication in children for kawasakis

rocky mountain spotted fever is the only indication is children for doxycycline

Tinea capitis (in children) is the only real indication in medicine for Griseofulvin (currently)..there are better drugs for onychomycosis, etc

i meant kawasaki for aspirin

No, I just remembered that from immunology in Step1 grin

I am a little short of time, and I think I don't have the luxury of reading another pediatric book. Look like I will be stuck with Kaplan pediatrics after all. However that doesn't change the fact that this is the worst Kaplan book IMO.
