Hi
Agony ends for step 1 it seems as I took it yesterday and though, worst can happen, its over!!! As I passed thru the first block, I got their intention. "They are not going to ask any question that you saw before". So, first block seemed harder than any other block. I finished the second block without any break...then took a 5 minute break and another 2 blocks in a session. And, thats it! Exam was almost over. I just had 3 more blocks.
I came out, contemplated, smoked a few fags  Graphs were quite familiar but all the odd picks of ANS Drug effects etc. Patho carried most of the weightage but I think score-flipper was Molecular Biology. I have done courses in Mol. bio. and questions were upto the mark of a Mol. Bio. expert!! Micro and Pharmac puzzled me a lot and at one moment, I forgot the Virus chart (hell of double stranded, negative sense and positive sense). Patho slides looked familiar, I dont know why?
Rest of the three blocks were much easier than I thought. They picked qs from Kaplans qbank this time, quite a lot many! Perhaps, I did bad in first few blocks, so they are kinda adapting the test!!1
I finished exam 1 hour before. Well, thats not very difficult if you dont have a lot to think over qs. Some questions I knew, some I didnt...thinking was not helping much. Some statistics calculations but they took seconds...2+2= 4 sort of maths!
what else? lemme chill before I start studyin for step 2

Wonderful! I hope you do well! What were the mol bio questions asking for, and were there any small questions in anatomy, like relations and...Did u do the qbank on line or the cd...how many questions were similar? Were most questions clinical or basic science, Im sure you did fine.

wish u all the best drjha!!!!

hi grin
I finish my exam today and I am also very happy about it. I hope I passed . There was a lot of q from patho, slides, gross pictures of liver,x of kidney/whats a cause of dilated kidney and urether on one side/, testes. Then there was also a lot of autonomic pharm /similar to kaplan but differet grafs or cell cultures effects/ and molecular biology/ q bank has none/.I also had some embryo and ethics. There were reasonable q and not like kaplan q bank , but you can have a taste of it if you take nbme test. good lack everybody 8)

Yeah, I would say NBME is quite close to exam but its useless because they dont give the answers.

All I would recommend is master key concepts like acidosis/alkalosis (atleast 8 qs were there), Graphs of Physio as well as pharmac drug kinetics, side effects of all anti-cancer and anti-viral drugs, Fungi and Viruses in Micro(because, they know, u never do it seriously and u do mistakes in pretty straight qs) and do as many qs u can in Behavioural science(BRS is good).

And be cool during the exam..any time u feel, u r gettin tense, take break right after the block and come outside...feel the weather...appreciate the nature  , sip coffee, have a coke or smoke (whatever helps!). Ppl usually forget hunger but some good snacks would help.

Several people who recently took the exam have mentioned elsewhere on this forum as to having Molecular Bio questions that exceeded their expectations. Could you please give an example of one maybe from your past study that seemed familiar this time around? All the best to you and your future

hi mistral
You have to take some kind of q bank to practise q and look at your
strenghts and weaknesses/kaplan has 2000 q where you can take them by subject and view answers and explanations/. NBME has only 400 q and you cannot view your answers, you dont know which you answer correctly which not. In my opinion one should take them at least 1 mth before exam to have time to recover and study more details .I am not aiming for 99 score so it was very depressing when I saw my score and I had only 1 week left till exam. I took only 200 of them and I did not have any exactly similar one , but I had one alike it was about hemofilia A, which is the next step affected by it/with what 8 reacts/. NBME has one about von Willebrant factor. Anyway you have to study in details smiling face
It is a long way, good luck

hi doctorjha smiling face
:?: It is interesting that whatever your q where I had the same topics. I also had quite a few acidosis-alkalosis q. In one they did not give me even pH.A lot of behavioral-ethics but I dont think you can practise them, you have to know ganeral roules-Kaplan helped with some of them but not all. :!: It is time to relax before next step.

Thanks everybody,
Well, Mol. bio questions leaking i m not sure if i can do that. But, jus to give u an idea, it ranged from studyin a few western blot, mutation types(thats not much difficult) and few even asked about specific genes involved (ppl who dont have a background will have difficulty to understand "what a homeotic gene is?").
Anne is right in terms of behavioural science. But, still I found qs similar to qbanks. So, it always helps to solve qbanks.
Anne, questions were not only similar, I also found one qs repeated exactly the same in other block. I dint however came across acidosis qs without pH. Step 2 is just 3 months from now I am taking, so it will be a tough time again.

Hi Doctorjha,

I read your detailed exam experience, it would really help all of us who are preparing for step 1 .
I have one question that how did you practice to identify various slides or pics (gross and micro pathology slides), CT scans, MRIs etc. As I am not taking Kaplans center prep, I cant see their videos.
Please suggest me any site for all subjects. I saw web path and one anatomy site (givent at the back of FA). Which slides or pics I should see? Only those that are in books, in FA or in Goljans lectures? ( that he was talking about in his audio lectures)
I am taking step 1 on july 30th.
I graduated many years ago. Some times I feel, I cant do it, when I read messages on this forum, I feel I am way behind you all.
When ever i start studying, I cant concentrate for long time, plus my memory is so bad. I need advice!
I am about to complete my first reading and plannning to take Kaplan q bank in july.
I will appreciate your reply.
May you get excellent score!.

Hi Sar,
Its easier for you to get thru Step 1 as u have graduated quite a time ago. Questions r quite logical and it really need a person to have a feel of all the subjects especially ethics qs. About CT Scan, and other slides, you dont need to worry. They give a lot of clue in q itself and most of the time, you dont need to look at them also. If you have done webpath, its more than enough.
Think of a situation - you r given a ventilation perfusion scan. You never saw it before. Dont panic...look at it...you will see...its all blank in ventilation scans but its darker in prefusion scan....underventilated-overperfused..isnt it?.....and one of the choice is that!!!

Thanks Doctorjha for your reply, support, and advice. I will now concentrate on theory more than slides.
Thank you!

Hii Famz,
We can surely prepare together for step 2. I am taking the test in August. I have started with Kaplan's and doing system-wise. I am integrating Medicine and peds and even surgery in common topics. I just finished Gastroenterology of these three subjects. A lot more to do. How about you?
I am from Champaign, IL.

Frankly speaking, I dint do Webpath more than just one glance. May be it helped but I dont think I got any slide from webpath but what else you can do? Thats the most complete review of all the slides.
Though dont worry about slides, u will get a good clinical and pathological vignette such that your diagnosis of slide is amost made.
Congrats Famz! When did you get ur score? I know u will make it!! I think its now my turn to get the score as I gave exam on 17th may. I have started with Kaplan's though I also have Harrison's Pre-test and Blueprint in Neurology and Cardiology in "things to do" in mind. But, I am taking in august. So, I have pretty less time. Are you too aiming for 2005 match?
