Friends!
I think theres no reason to write 257/99 if its not truth.
Alot of people write this here as I noticed just to attract ATTENTION

It seems that alot of people do not get enouph attention from their loved ones,so they seek attention on the Internet.
I would write the real score even if its 75 76 79 or 81

But not statements like ''I did not study too much only 3-4 hrs aday and passed with 257/99 I am an IGM from Turkish Medical School. I was warking beside my study too.
It sounds like a commercial for that Medical School.
Its just my opinion.Sorry!

are you sure about it ?

We are professional people with nothing but truth and purity in hearts...I wonder if at all people will do that ?

And if they do ,why should they attract people

InshAllah i will not do that...if i get bad score i shall never come on this forum again.. ,that is what i decided because the score will determine one's potential as a good Doc.

Yes, I agree with Asmi...this forum is a very good source of inspiration for all who wanted to get into our dreams..of getting residency in US....

Well guess if we are not sure , we should not just spell it out..well even if there is some one who does that..sorry to say that..they are not deceving us..but they are deceving themselves..!!!

Anyway for us its all a source of inspiration....there are so many many good docs here trying to helpout others..

Infact I was stuggling since couple of months..without any source of communication other than few bunch of friends..but after getting to know this forum..I am glad I found this..I am in my track !!!

Especially people like meg, yulia, robokosh, mdwannabe, vkt...etc etc..they are all a very good source of inspiration..

No wonder Asmi..ask why should they attract people????? It really sounds crazy..its not for us..but for them we feel sad.

This is for Asmi: You are a good contributor to this forum..so many people have inspired from you,..no matter what it is whether you score good or not..this forum needs people like you!!!

InShahAllah Asmi ur hard work will not go waste..believe you will be blessed with a great score..

All the best everybody!!!!

All I would say is its not a good controversy to raise as those are the people who can guide us. I agree with asmi as the topic of medical ethics come in role. It might be however possible that sometimes ppl become much confident (or arrogant  ). But, thats okay for ppl who really deserve such arrogance.
As far as my opinion is concerned, I too dream of such score though I know its way too far for me and I have just 5 days remaining for the test. But, I would surely report my scores to the forum even if I fail as its gonna help future test-takers. Sharing experience is important part of this forum and no matter what score u get, its the experience that you only have!!

  #5

Of course its great to share experience
But what I try to say that such a score is very very rare. Like in pathology we have very very rare dis(1/100 000-200 0000) so its VERY UNLIKELY that 2 people get it at the same time especialy while working.
Lets be realistic

Before expressing my thoughts, I would like to thank asmi, kalsam, and doctorjha for very mature replies.

In fact I would not prefer to be involved in this topic but the subject personally included me saying ' Turkish Med School, study while working, studying 3-4 hours, etc.' May be sad for you perses, but all of these are true.

Before I got step 1, I was begging to find a person's experience post, who got 99, as I was aiming same score. Actually I am doing the same thing now for step2. Fortunately, I have found some decent people's experiences and these helped me A LOT. I correlated my kaplan and nbme scores with a guy who got 99, they were comparable and that gave me enough courage to ace the exam. So I know how it felt for me to find nothing but one experience to lead me in my studies. I would like other people to have same help and hopefully I did this and reached more than a 1000 people since.

Two things perses:

1- It is interesting that among 1000 people who read my experience, why only you felt to post a message like that? I know the answer but you should think about it. Is the problem of mine, getting attention or; problem of yours, lacking confidence and trust to other people ?

2- Actually even 95th percentile gets two digit score 99, which means 5 in every 100 applicant gets score 99. So the probability of having two people having 99 in this forum is at least 25/10000 . Far more away from your calculation. Hope this clears.

I do not really take this personally but I hope this will be a good answer for people who are falsely judging nice people who only want to help other people during that painful process.

Best of luck in studies

Thanks kalsam and VKT...inshaAllah hope for the best smiling face smiling face .

If misleading and misperception comes in our profession..then no one will believe or trust doc's anymore.

I hope none of us are like that , we are mature people and sincerity is our central pillar .

Actually Perses.....the occurence of getting 99% is more often than you thought and is not a rare occassion.I think you should give full credit to those who are willing to share their expereinces.Instead of congratulating people who deserve them.....you're sceptical about their performance. However everyone has their opinion. All I know is that I'm thankful that VKT and others took the time to share their expereinces as its surely helped me.All the best to all.

well i would like to say something bout it. i have noticed that ppl with 99 are always here giving advice about their strategies and what not. please dont get me wrong. i dont doubt that they r all wrong, but thing is how come i am not seeing other ppl who scored in high 80s or low 90s post their messages compared to this 99 score ones. i am happy for ppl who achieve such high scores, ppl who work hard deserve such scores. but maybe it discourages ppl who r in high 80s or low 90s to post their scores and i have even seen ppl with such scores (80s and low 90s) saying that they know that they did bad! come on these scores other than 99 r not bad! and not everyone is aiming for same residencies, everyone has individual goals. and i have seen ppl with scores of 78 and 81 get in family med and internal med. so i mean those ppl shouldnt get discourage by ppl with 99. So i would like ppl whose scores are not that high but they get in residencies should come back and post their messages. so maybe peres is trying to say we need a balance in this forum, we need to see all kinda ppl with different scores with their experience. right now mostly we see extremes, one group who have failed and other ppl who have scored 99. i am using the word 'mostly' cuz there r few other ppl, but we need to have more of that. its like ppl feel embarrassed to mention their scores in 80s or 70s or 90s. that should not be the case.
i love this forum, i have learned a lot from this forum, i have given and got a lot of support to and from the members. but i would love to see other ppl be encouraged to post their messages, we need to be more welcoming.
like malasyian said, i am very thankful for ppl with high scores who took time and share their experience. it help me shape up my study schedule and gives me encouragement.

I guess you are falling in your own comments, you get our attention, but that people increase my confidency, they make me get into the books and study harder. For me is nor hard to believe that there are very good doctors in other contrys, and you know what even that they are good they have to study for this test what I have to say is:

Congratulation that people that pass the test with that score.
Probable I will not do that good but I have to tell them thank you for make me feel that everyone can pass the test if we study.Thank you for been in this forum to increase every people self- steem, but you know you also increase other people envy.

grin ,
I admire perses for raising this topic but now, its the time to end this controversy. Neither Perses nor VKT are taking this discussion at personal level and that had been the best part of discussion. And the gist that I have got is...
1. So, we have genuine ppl with 99 percentile here in this forum. Guys! 99 is a reachable score. How to get that? VKT and others will keep guiding us  Thanks and great wishes to them!
2. Ppl with scores above 80 or passing should be encouraged (Thank god! Now, I wish to post my scores after exam grin ). One addition - Ppl who fail are the ppl who can guide equally great and may be better!!! I have my exam 3 days from now. Please allow me to post my scores after exam.
3. Envying of ppl is no more an issue as we are pretty mature ppl and later, I got the intention of Perses to actually pull out the statistics behind it. Null Hypothesis of Perses rejected without any type 1 error  Thanks to Perses for a well thought trial and VKT for answerin it much better. Ofcourse, he deserves 99 and I have no doubt about it.

I ll be short here. You know my score, 220/90 as I was notified.
I studied 6 weeks, Kaplan video and notes, some extra books in Phisio and Path. Also had a lot of BIG family problems to deal with, on average studied 7 hours a day, and last 4 weeks did regularly q-bank, .. with 2 days a week q-bank only. Did not di NMBE...did not know about it. Was scoring 68 to 78%.
I finnished my 2nd year 5 months ago.
I do not consider this score a big achievement. I think for ER residency I need at least 230.. but I don't care...with hard work anything is possible.
If I inspire anyone...I am humbled by it. But what ever works for you guys..I am glad to help.

I do not have many messages posted here, but here's the time to make my voice knowned grin . I 'd like to say, that I consider this forum inspiring. It gives me strength reading about people who scored that high, but what i appreciate most is that forum lives and grows due to our (your) everyday struggle, hesitations and willingness to help. I think it is a satisfaction seeing people sharing....
thank you, everybody for being that opened

i dont wanna say who is right or wrong here bcoz everyone has his own opinion n a way of thinking. But on d basis of my personal experience i can say everyone on this forum has inspired me in a way. Whether it is smone who scored in 90s or those who scored in 80s,all of 'em ve contributed to others' successes.
Especially mdwannabe u ve given soooooooo much to this forum dat we cant thank u enough fr ur support. Ur concepts n d way u reach to d answer really inspired me to learn things in a different way. Though i vent taken d test yet so i cant say much.My heartiest congratulaions to u.
And peres i dont understand wat led u to the conclusion dat people ve been lying abt their scores. why wud they? We hardly know each other so why wud smone try to impress others. Moreover, those who ve gotten scores in 90s r just trying to help us out. They r not gaining anything by doin so.
Isnt it better dat inspite of making personal attacks we should rather learn frm others' experiences and move forwards to achieve our common goal.

  #17

Peres.....4 classfellows of mine have given the exam and gotten their results....3 got 99s and one got 97.......

  #18

Perses..Thanks a lott for posting your doubt..well may be many of us in this forum may had or had not this doubt, but....this discussion definitely made to have more useful inputs and opinions from everyone...

Well now the good news is..it seems two digit score 99 is not a 'Big dream land"..which we most of us thought , as is not not at all accessible....
but with all hard work and perseverence we can always have and aim for that....until we give exam..that will be our motive...afterall !!!

Okie guys still we all can dream ...happy studying!!!.

Cheers Everybody smiling face !!!

win-win situation:
People who got a high score doesn't really need other people's help. Rather, what they do in this forum is spending their time writing their great strategy and skill to guide other people without any reward. Even if the story is not completely true(I can't imagine there might be anyone who would waste one's time and energy making up non-existing heroic story), nobody get hurt. If we aim at 100%, we might get at least 50%. If we aim at 50%, we might get at most 25%. I personally deeply appreciate those people who make me pursue 100%.

lost-lost situation:
Among people who got a high score, there were some people who have very generous and altruistic personality. They made an effort to give advice to other people. One day, someone expressed one's doubt about their effort(Of course 'someone' did that because 'someone' was worried about members of forum). They felt humiliated and got disappointed. Their innocent motivation was offended by the doubt. They lost their volition. They no longer want to share their strategy, because they're afraid of getting hurt again by people's doubt and jealousy.

Now, where are we...

First of all, I'm an IMG preparing for the step 1 in Sept. I have been to this forum before (passive participation) and really like it as opposed to the other usmle forums. I think this is much more informative and interactive and focused. I graduated in 1999, practised medicine for 2 yrs in my home country and have been working full time as a research associate here since 2001. With my full time and very demanding work, I can barely spare 1-2 hrs per day for usmle preparation, and I'm planning to take it in Sept 2004. Weekends are definitely the best time for me to study and in addition, I have a family to take care of. Despite all this, I want to score high; and I was really horrified when I looked at people citing their experiences, specially since most people who score high always seem to have spent 5-7 hrs per day and sometimes whole days in preparation. Since I cannot manage to do that, I was almost feeling hopeless and thought I'm trying to chase after a mirage. However, after reading VKT's experience, who seems to have worked under a similar time constraint like myself, I feel encouraged again and have started to pick up my somewhat lagging speed. So, to VKT.. thanks a lot for citing your experience and I will be really grateful if you can give me some hints on how you managed your time (research, data analysis, publications vs mle prep). Thanks a lot again, I think sometimes support and encouragement are the key to keeping you in the path you want to be. And to Perses please, I think this forum does an excellent job of support, interaction and sharing; and by bringing in negative attitudes that has no definite roots, you are really not helping! just don't take it personally, I'm stating it as a fact. And for all, as I progress in my prep, I will try to share here as everyone else does.

i think that if someone can reach 99 so can u and i.
instead of doubting their motives [which takes up alot of negative energy] we should learn from them [which makes u feel confident and in control].

  #22

you really need a 230 to get an er residency, or is it just for the one you want?

  #23

personally i see no reason why 99th percentile should be a rare score.u just hav to define what u want and give urself a routine and time to work towards it.do what works for you.if what works for u is 4 hrs a day then so be it.who can tell whether its not just those things u read for 4 hrs daily that came out.i just did my exam and i know i'm not one of the people that study for endless hours in fact i didnt even have a constant study routine,i just read as it worked for me and i'm very hopeful of getting a good score.so perses u know people are different.it's just like in med school some people always passed well without appearing to try at all.i believe such people have done their work in the past and layed a good foundation for themselves.99 is not unreachable, its not even so far away ,it just depends on how much u want it.
