Medullary respiratory center - Has a dorsal and a ventral group. Dorsal is responsible for inspiration and its innervated by the vagus and glossopharyngeal nerves. The output from here goes to the diaphragm via the phrenic nerve.
Ventra group effects expiration, normally expiration is passive, so this group is only active during exercise.
Pneumotaxic center in upper pons is involved in inhibition of inspiration and the apneustic center in lower pons stimulate inspiration.
Central chemoreceptors detects changes in pH of CSF, and peripheral chemoreceptors detects decreases in arterial PO2.
