A 34Y/O female, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Stool bloody and associated with urgency and noctunal bowel movements. T 38.4C. PE Mild periumbilical and LLQ tenderness. Which of the following agents is most likely cause?

1. Campylobacter jejuni
2. Toxigenic E-coli

The answer chooses 1. Why not Toxigenic E-coli? (bloody stool as well).

I think its a mistake...

this is right.. the answer can not be ETEC.If the stool is bloody then it has to be some invasive organism and ETEC is not invasive. Following are invasive though:

-campylobacter
-Shigella
-Salmonella
-EIEC (entero invasive E. coli)

And also if there is no travel history then ETEC is less likely to be the answer... so without a travel history camylobacter is anyway very common than ETEC. And then never forget the 'BLOOD IN THE STOOLS'!!!
