primary gain -- use of a defense mech. or other psychologic process to get a relief frm emotional conflict & freedom frm anxiety(wat u get internally i.e a good feeling)
aka psychologic gain

secondary gain --an indirect benefit obtained thru an illness or debility. It may be personal attention ; monetary or disability benefits or escape frm unpleasnt situations & responsibilities.(wat u get frm outer world)

this is an eg of tertiary gain(ques dat rida has mentioned)
A 62 year old man comes to see a doctor . he has depression since his wife died. He talks to doctor once a week for 1 year . At the end of the year he thanks the doctor for his help during difficult times and says he no longer needs a psychiatrist. As the doctor says good bye and good luck to the patient, he feels proud of himself. the feeling of the doctor is tertiary gain........
