Difference between transudate and exudate?

transudate
protein < 3g/dl ; no cells
causes
dec oncotic pressure; Na water retention
pitting edema

exudate
protein > 3 g/dl; neutrophils
causes
inflammation ---> inc vas permeablility
no pitting edema

Absolutely right, also extra note:
Exudate - shows incrased inflammatory leukocytes which are metabolically active hence consume glucose, lowering serum glucose levels.

Tuberculosis Exudate
Malignancy Transudate??

Thanx for all the extra stuff, didn't know about that!
So ascites would be seen in exudate rather than transudate?

tuberculosis transudate
malignancy exudate

in ascites , it depends on the cause..........
if it is due to cirrhosis, portal HTN or CCF, it will be transudate
if it is due to malignancy then it is exudate.......

Thanx mash, i thought TB would be exudate because since it forms granulomas which is part of the inflammatory process. Thanx for clearing it up!

sorry rida it is exudate in tuberculosis( i just checked it)
Infectious causes of ascites include fungus, tuberculosis, and AIDS-related peritonitis. Patients with tuberculous ascites usually have a high ascitic fluid protein, elevated ascitic fluid white count.
