A 47-year-old male is seen in the medicine clinic with recently diagnosed mixed hyperlipidemia. An antihyperlipidemic is administered that favorably affects levels of VLDL, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and inhibits cholesterol synthesis. Which of the following agents did he receive?


A. Lovastatin

B. Colestipol

C. Niacin

D. Probucol

E. Neomycin

My initial thought Niacin as it effects everything but no flushed face in patient, so I think i'll go with A.

You were right at first with niacin....always go with your first thought....trust me.

Niacin blocks synthesis of VLDL and apo B in liver causing a decrease in VLDL, LDL, and TG in circulation. Sometimes you get an increase in HDL, or may remain at same level. I am not sure if flushing occurs in everyone or not. But you can administer aspirin to decrease it.

thanx, i always do make this mistake be second guessing myself and picking the wrong answer.
