Livingston is a town of 100,000 people. During 1960, there were 1000 deaths from all causes. All cases of tuberculosis were found and totaled 300, 200 male cases and 100 femile cases. Also during 1960, there were 60 deaths from tuberculosis; 50 of them were
male. The sex-specific mortality rate for tuberculosis in males is

(A) 5 per 100,000
(B) 50 per 200 X1000
(C) 60 per 300 X 1000
(D) 60 per 100,000 X 1000
(E) not calculable from the data given

The answer is E. The sex-specific mortality rate for tuberculosis (deaths of males/population of males x 1000) cannot be calculated from the data given because no information is
provided on how many male and female deaths there were of the total 1000 deaths.
