Please can anybody clearly and simple explain transudate, exudate, edema and connection between them?

edema just fluid in the interstitum. Look at the forces working at the capillaries and u will see.
edematous fluid can be transudate or exudate

Transudate less then 3 gms
Exudate + 3 grams of protein ( PMN dead cells from infection etc ) Infectious causes like Chlamdyia subtype L, w. bancrofti, axillary lymphnode removal, of in breast cancer peau de orange will give u typical exudate picture. it is usually due to inflmation and lymphnode blockage and fluid builds up in between the cells.

Transudate can be due to inc hydrostatic pressure where u are occluding the venous comparting like tornequet use or where u have venous stasis as in CHF. It can also be due to dec oncotic pressure as in liver pathology, 3rd degree burn or even nutrient related ( kwashikor ) . Also in cancer like adrenal aldosterone producing and primary hyperaldosteroneism ( conns ) can also give u transudate.

I think knowing the causes is impt because they typically describe disease and what is the mechanism of this person having increase filtration etc.

hey as dr.goljan says it edema is excess fluid in the interstitial space in ecf...transudate is poor cell, poor protein fluid in int.due to starlings forces..increased hydro pr,decreased onco pr,as in dependent pitting edema ,ascites(body cavity effusioons)

now many cause of incr hydro pr and decreased onco pr are all transudate!!

exudate is cell rich protein rich fluid due to increased permeability of vsl as in swelling of tissue not dep edema, pus in cavities peritonitis!!
