An all-day family reunion was held on a summer day when the temperature soared to 103°F. The picnic food included potato salad, chicken, and hamburgers. The next morning, five family members experienced diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pain, which lasted for several days. One person was eventually hospitalized, and gram-negative H2S-producing rods were isolated from the stool. Which of the following bacteria was most likely the cause? (A) Shigella dysenteriae (B) Shigella sonnei (C) Shigella flexneri (D) Salmonella typhirnuriurn ( E ) Salmonella typhi

Answer is D - S. typhimirium. I think the original poster misspelled the species. Shigella are NOT H2S positive. I believe S. typhi does not produce H2S either, although I've never seen it in a patient's culture (thank goodness). All Salmonella are lactose negative, however. H. pylori produces H2S? First I've heard of it, Karime. Please include your source. HP is very difficult to grow and requires specialized media. It will not grow on typical stool culture media.
