F.A 2008 edition pg 410.


Dependence
7) continued use in spite of knowing the problems that it causes

Abuse - "symptoms have NEVER met criteria for dependence"
4) continused use in spite of persistent problems caused by use


I find them to be similar. help =(

Alcohol abuse = "harmful use" of alcohol.
aAlcohol abusers as those who drink despite recurrent social,personal and legal problms due to alcohol use. Harmful use means either physical or mental damage.

and alcohol dependent= alcohol abuse plus some other criteria
i.e drinking only one brand or type of alcoholic beverage.
only going to social events that will include drinking
only hanging out with others who drink
Alcohol tolerance i.e having to drink increasing amounts to achieve previous effects
Withdrawal symptoms
Drinking to relieve or avoid withdrawal
Subjective awareness of the compulsion to drink or craving for alcoho
return to drinking after a period of abstinence

thnx for explaination but to me #4 and #7 are similar and i can not differentiate these 2 points, that is what is confusing me
