Here are some clues to type of RTA:
  1. RTA type 1 ( distal): associated with Renal Stones and hypercalciuria. HIGH Urine PH despite a metabolic acidosis
  2. RTA type 2 (Proximal): think acetazolamide(Diamox) and BICARBONATE wasting, Fanconi Syndrome associated with type of RTA (Fanconi Syndrome: generalized proximal tubule dysfunction, low phosphate, low uric acid, loss of amin acid and Glycosuria.
  3. RTA type 4 (distal) : Aldosterone deficiency and HYPERkalemia. caused by diabetic nephropathy, spironolactone and interstitial nephritis

so the RTA 4 is the only type that has HYPERkalemia, type 1 and 2 have HYPOkalemia
