this year applications are double. than previous years

How far this is true.???

  #2

the truth could only be known if a statistical study is done.

i also wonder how true is this.rolling eyes

NRMP comes out with no of applicants participated in match at the end of match process. Untill than there is no way of denying or proving it.

Not likely!
In the last Match the IMG applicant count is approx. 10,000 (US+NonUS). It just can't double to 20,000 in a year.

I created a graph of applicants vs. matched for last 4 years here:

http://www.prep4usmle.com/download.php?comid=5126...

As you can see the IMG applicant count is on the rise, but not exponentially!

  #5

I doubt it!

This year (2008), I have 2933 applications as of today.

Last year (2007), I had 2689 - increase of 244, and a total of 3503 (223 Scramble applications)

2006, I had 2461 on this date - and a total of 3816 (249 Scramble applications)

In 2005, I wasn't keeping weekly track, but had a total of 3911 (which includes 789 scramble applications)

Thanks bbb, that has dispelled a few of my myths. If I may ask you, and if possible for you to clarify, how much truth is there to the perception that, "the number of candidates with expeience from UK/UK experience/UK degrees is increasing?"

I am asking you this, since this is something that crops up again and again, as the reason for the increasing competition, that is if the competition is increasing!

Yes, we have lots of persons with UK experience - not specifically UK degrees, but experience. I'd say that there is an increase, but last year it was really noticed.

I guess the number of programs each applicant applied is increasing. Just think about it, if there is only 10,000 IMG here to apply for 2009 match, and 3000 to 4000 apply to one program, and if one is just apply for one program, then there is only three to four programs out of there for us to apply!wink

bbb

do you take us lors and personal statement into consideration before givin interviews or is it only during interview?

Thanks bbb, for the input. So, maybe I am reading in between lines and words, but you feel that there is a leeser effect of the "UK experience" this year as comapred to last?

how does UK experience make a difference. why would a USA hospital prefer UK experience?

I guess, the programs are looking for credible experience! I think the stress on UK expeience if you dont have US experience arises from the well respected health care system of that country.

I am assuming that the same experience from another institution, other than US and UK will also be accepted, the catch being the person or the commitee who makes teh decision, should know or have some impression about that institute.

bbb can correct me if I am wrong.

Some do, some don't. Some hospitals want to know that you could practice with English speaking patients, some don't care.

Thanks bbb, did I just hear myself repeating the same sentence, "You are the best! Your residents and program must be so lucky to have you!"

Gee, thought that I heard an echo. One of my residents just told me that I was the backbone of the program and that she loved me.

grin
