The acidophils consist of somatotrophs and lactotrophs, whereas the basophils consist of thyrotrophs, gonadotrophs, and corticotrophs.

As for what they stain with, I'm not quite sure. Acidophils stain with acidic dyes, and basophils stain with basic dyes. : I know that a PAS with an orange G counterstain will give quite good differentiation of the two cell types.

Eosin-acidic dye - is pinkish-orange - GH, prolactin
Hematoxylin - base dye - is purple-blue - ACTH, FSH, LH, TSH

Heh--it's quite difficult to distinguish acidophils from basophils on a routine H&E stain. grin But basically, any acidic dyes such as acid fuchsin will stain acidophils, and any basic dyes (ex. Schiff reagent) would stain basophils.
