Hi everyone,

I'm an IMG from the UK. I graduated in 2004, and have completed my pre-registration training (1 year internship equivalent), and basic surgical training (2 year rotation). I have worked as a doctor for a total of 3.5 years, of which 3 years has been in surgical training and 21 months was in Plastic Surgery.

I am planning to apply for Plastics residencies in the USA. I'll put my application in this year, but I know I'm a little behind the game with the timing. If I don't get anything, I'll continue my research for another year and apply again for 2010.

At a recent social event for my wife's work (she's a pediatrician in California), one of her attendings suggested I might be able to write to the American College of Surgeons, to ask if they will consider granting me "time back" for the UK training I have completed so far - potentially allowing me to skip intern year and go in at PGY2. Has anyone heard of people doing this? Does anyone know who I should contact?

I checked the FACS website, but there was no mention of this, and no suitable contact details. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,

Lee

Hi, I actually made some progress with this, but it's not great news...

While it is sometimes possible to be advanced in a program due to international experience, it must be applied for by the program director ONLY AFTER AT LEAST 9 MONTHS of observing you/me in the program. At that point, the PD can apply to the ACS on your behalf. Generally, 3 years in the UK is equivalent to skipping 1 year in the US (though that is at the discretion of both the PD and the ACS).

Hope this helps anyone else in my position.

Here's looking forward to the intern year (again)!

Lee
