This forum has helped me for taking step 1, step 2 and CS, and i passed them comfortably thats why I think i had a delusion that i will pass step 3 with same comfort.

I took exam on 29th April and got result today. My score is 73. Passing score is 75! I am in residency training and i just wanted to pass this exam but i didnt. I have lot of pressure and stress from residency program to finish this exam ASAP.

I was comfortable when i took exam hoping that i would pass without difficutly. I did not take much breaks, and i dont know how it happened (i am still unable to figure it out), when i was doing my last block and keep watching my block time ( i had enough) time to finish the block, suddenly I got message that your exam will be ended in 2 min. I had about 15-16 questions left that I just answered blindly. I did not take the tutorial, and I had almost one hour break, when I calculated my break time it was around 45-50 min. I think those questions that i missed are responsible for my failure. I was not planning to score high I just wanted to pass!

Now i am so discouraged, with lots of stress in program, lagging behind from program peers, that I thought i should quit residency because i think I can not pass this devil!

In adition, I attempted step 3 in april also and one day before exam I got severely sick, recieved meds im, and was kind of sedated or dizzy/drowsy but still attempted the exam due to programs pressure and requirement, and obviously I failed with 58 score. I did not take it seriously as I thought this bad score is due to my illness at that time. But this time I was really hopeful!

Anyways, I just wrote it here to ventilate. May be it is of some help to others.

sar-I'm really sorry to hear that
I can understand-how difficult it is to prepare when you are in residency-especially when it is not IM/FM

But I do not see that it is an end of everything
You were so close to pass score this time-so you actually needed some more intelligent preparation.I feel you may rectify it next time by giving proper consideration to CCS

GL for next time

You were so close , u ll pass next time.

Just to do Usmleworld questions agaian again ..for next month and go for the exam. u ll surely pass. First book ur step 3.

Thanks a lot for you replies,

Yes I am not in IM/FM residency how do you know?

I did UW 1st time and 2nd time, also my CCS performance is on higher and borderline side, mostly higher side.

some one suggest me first aid and kaplan? what do you both suggest.

Can I take 3rd time, in 6 months duration (from april 29 to aug 29) and in oct??

I am lost and dont know what to do now in short period of time. Previously I read for IM (one time reading) of kaplan step 3 notes for some chapters and kaplan step 2 notes of other subjects. UW, (and took notes for last week revision), crush step 3, also for paeds, gynae, psych, and surgery, I hve read video lecture notes of step 2 (lectures and their short high yield notes).

Now anyone suggest me what to do next??? kaplans q bank, first aid?? or repeat uw??

nodhey SAR, After you have had an experience with this exam twice(doesnt matter if it was bad)you should not be so lost, sit down calmly and jot down where all did you lack, what kind of info you were struggling with during exam, customise your needs and fulfill them, loosing hope blocks the brain, i think thats what is happening with you, so figure out to remove the block and find the answers, you know them it is just that you dont realize. take care, gear up and you will do it this time, God Blessnod

sar... here's my two cents.. aim high, and hit the point! you must have heard this before.. but when I took my exam, my goal was not to pass.. my goal was to get a high score.. the logic of the matter is.. if you did not reach that high score, you'll end up just passing... grin good luck!

Thanks for your replies!

When I think about the exam I think for most of the questions i was not sure about the correct choices, it was always a tie b/w 2 choices. Choices were so close. I dont know how can i improve this. you are correct I have lost hope and confidence in me!

Your advices are imp and I will think and plan, calmly! Will try to aim high also, but at this time it seems impossible!

This forum and Your replies have really helped me to even think about taking exam again, I was so discouraged that I just had decided to quit residency! Its getting harder and harder after each attempt also am losing confidence.

thanks a lot for giving me support!

Sar.

smiling facemakes me so happy reading the positve feedback from you and we helping you regain your faith back into the project, you will do great, this is what my heart is telling, lots and lots of good luck, never lose hope, God puts you to test with situations like this and we have to reinforce that we are firm believers by taking His test with great courage.
you telling confused between two choices is good sign, it tells you know the subjects but not confidently enough, so just have to brush up, nothing else, JUST do it!!!nod

I was in your shoes not long ago. I perfectly understnad your feeling. I was out of a job one year due to not passing this test. Yes the first time I thought it was a fluke that I did not score well but the second time my score was even lower and I was then already finished a primary care residency when I applied for the test the second time around. My sincere advise to you is use this forum to its maximum as it is very very very good and helpful thanks to all who passed the exam and shared their experiences. If it is of any help For my part a combination of premier review and uw works best. However a catch is you MUST READ the premier review notes and uw ccs cases (yes all 88 of them) 10-15 times until you can close your eyes and visualize the page numbers and highlighted points. If you do that and practice the uw question I think third time for you will be a charm. By the way don't beat yourself up too much it happens to me and also to one of my good friend. He is also in primary care residency. We both passed and how have a decent job with some spare changes. Good luck.

Hi Sackatdoc and bluecollarmd,

Thanks for your replies and your encouragement! I am having phases of hopelessness and sadness, when i feel this way i come to this forum and read your replies and other messages. It definitely gives me support.

Thinking about new strategy to pass this exam but just to thnk about that hard work that I did, is making me scared, to go thorugh it again!! neglecting my child and my family, because of this exam is also making me more anxious and sad.

Anyway there is no way, other than to take it. I am reading this forum and trying to get most from it. Thanks for sharing your own experience withme. I hope i will pass this exam too.

What is premier review??

Thanks again for replies,

Sar.

smiling faceyou are welcome, by studying harder you are not neglecting your family but doing good to them as once you'll pass, your confidence will be enormously catapulted and you would be more happy with your self and will make your family happier, so passing is very crucial and you will, coz you are already prepared, just have to polish yourself by removing the shortcomings, Good Luck with thatnod

Yes, I thought the same way (that i am doing good for them) but now after failing it twice, it seems like it is opposite.

What do you recommend to read now ( did uw and crush with kap IM step 2 notes, as mentioned above). What do you think when should i be ready for retake, in a month?? (end of oct) or more??

gud luck sar.

smiling facesar since everyboby reads the same stuff that you did for previous occasions, so brushing up the same material in a more active form is what you really need, since you told-you were getting confused with 2 choices in most of the cases, you have to ask WHY? and try to recollect same questions and scenarios that you have seen in the exams and try to figure out what was the real reason for your confusion, when this kind of thing happens in exam usually people are not confident as they have spent less time with those facts figuring out why are those the answers.
this all is just to help with whatever i can, truely even i have to take this exam in coming months, rather you post your experiences and we will opiniate on that, questions and stuff , okay take care and God Blesssmiling face

Thanks usmlegladiator and sackatdoc,

I did not know that you have to take step 3, i thought you are done with it.

I will do as you have suggested.
