heres the q and i really need some honest answers and some guidance just yesterday i sent an email to the 'chief' of a particular branch of IM regarding this observership. whether that hospital gives observership is not known to me. in the evening i got an email from his assistant saying that i should contact the 'clerkship in charge' of the university with which the hospital is affiliated with and she also gave me the complete contact details of the 'clerkship in charge'. now the funny thing is the 'chief' had forwarded his assistant the very email which i had originally sent to him. along with the original contents of my email he had added a few words of his own and when the assistant sent me the reply she forwarded that email along with the contact details of the 'clerkship in charge'. heres what the 'chief' had written to his assistant and thats what i am interested in knowing the meaining of. these are his exact words "dear xyx(assistants name), check with the university and the department to see if this is ok. its ok with me" what does it mean?? do i have a chance here?? by 'ok' i think he is referring to my application right?? i have to contact the 'clerkship in charge' on monday/tuesday. what should i tell her?? should i directly mention that i had sent an email to the 'chief' or should i ask her for an observership position first?? if she says that there are no positions available then should i mention to her about the contents of the email?? what if she says that it all depends on the 'chief', should i assume that i finally got a observership?? any kind soul who can answer my question and guide me?? and thanks to certain people on this forum i also came to know about mt sinai and sent an application there yesterday. but i wrote feb/march 2009 as the preferred dates. what should i do about that?? is it possilble to call mt sinai directly and ask them whether observership positions are vacant for feb/march so that if they arent i can atleast get the other observership if i am offered one there?? thanks to anyone who can guide me on this matter.

I think you always should agree with the chief first . Ask her for an observation with the same person. One thing they do not like in U.S. is changing what you say or manipulation. Just be direct and mention what was said to you. If you are in doubt , ask the physician again. good luck

Those words look positive It is simple, call whoever u are supposed to call next week and tell them that u had contacted the PD about an observership opportunity and his/her assistant got back to u saying that u shd route your application through the Clerkship department. Just that. Don't exagerate stuffs like the reply from the PD to the assistant said it was cool and blah blah. Remember that message wasn't meant for u. Don't concentrate your efforts on ony this. There are no assurances. Flood the mail boxes of more IM programmes in which u could be interested
