Hey Friends,

I got an IV from St.Barnabas, NY... I am an IMG and need a Visa. I was going through the forums and read pretty bad reviews about the program, everyone keeps saying its the worst program but no one says why it is so..Please post your thoughts about the pros n cons of the program. Can you please advice me when is the right time to schedule an interview? I didn't hear from any other program yet. I also need information regarding their Prematch offer, do they give us enough time to inform our decision, I heard some hospitals literally force you to accept their offer without giving enough time to think.
All responses are appreciated,
Thanks.

Here a scutwork.com revision:

St Barnabas Hospital Program (New York)

Teaching:
Atmosphere: Research:

Schedule

I wake up and reach at 7:30am every morning for sign ins except for saturdays if you are not on call. After taking the sign in we go to our respective floors start our work.First all interns round the patient on their own.We have vitals board on which we have all the vitals then we see our patients. After this we round with our pgy2 or pgy3 this rounds depends on the type of patients you have, on an average between 30-45 mins during which we plan the whole day. Then we have attending rounds at around 10 am .At 11am seniors go for morning repot for intern it is optional. We have mandatory noon time conference. Most of the time we have some snacks during the conference, after which you have your lunch .Two days a week clinics which are fantastic you can learn a lot .At 5 pm sign outs.

Teaching

Faculty most are young attendings recenly graduated from NYU very aggressive very friendly easy to get along always ready to teach up to date with the latest in internal medicine. Teaching is almost daily unless some patient crashes on the floor then patient is then priorites change. Confernces are good speakers from all over New York are invited plus we have our own staff giving lecture.

Atmosphere

Work is very stressful in the first year but I have many friends all over the country and is very stressful everywhere.Second year and third year are pretty smooth lot of time to read and teach juniors as well as ot do reasearch. most of students are img's since it is in the bronx american students dont prefer the life style but we have lot of americans in our emergency medicne and surgery program. People are very friendly are always ready to switch call as well cooperate in all all needed.Main motto being Patient Care Priority .All work must be done. Life outside hoispital is great since you are very close to manhattan 35 mins the commercial capital of World.Life in New York is great and you always find time to do lot of things apart form work.

Conclusion

This program you get to see a wide variety of pathology. You are very independent can order whichever test you want as long as performed in patients best interest, become very bold and after working here can work any where and can handle any patient. Once you are done you fell like a "Complete Doctor" Everyone in last few years I know of have landed in good jobs and fellowhips after finishing third year. Negative points , You have got to really really work hard in the first year.I f you are someone who cannot handle stress then this is not the best progrma for you.To work "happily" you must ahve a passion and dedication for Medicine or else you will get tired within few months. If any one of you have any questions or need any help if coming ofr interviews feel free to contact me.I dont promise but shall try my best to help depending on time I have. All those applying for residency, Best of Luck.

I have no idea why St.barnabas, NY has had zero match data since 2004.
May be they used to give prematch for all the positions.
Just to have more idea.
I really don't know about their reputation.

The post in scut work is so positive....why is there a lot of bad reputation then??

Thanks so much Ivonne, good to read something positive abt this program for the first time....As Rads pointed, I donno for what reason such horrible things are written abt it in all the forums????

  #11

I have only one question for you

Matching into a horrible program vs staying at home one extra year, which do you prefer?

Every program has its ups and downs, give me the worst program over one extra year at home, any day

I concur Blabla

Hello everybody

I have also seen some bad comments about St Barnabas before I accepted an IV there. I had my interview there last year and I went to see the hospital in person. I got a prematch in Texas, but I have friends on Barnabas. All said by scutwork.com is true. It is hard in the first year, but then life is easier. You start work at 7:30am and finish almost all at 4:30pm. There is also a night float. The area where is placed maybe is not too nice, but the hospital has all diseases you have to see in your training. You manage your patients with the supervison of your seniors, very very different from university hospitals where the attendings do everything and residents just look. I think people had writen bad thing because of the area where it is, which is also not bad, the hospital is pretty old, but has everything all hospital have. In the world of graduated internist, people say if you have done your training in NY (LIKE BARNABAS) you are prepared for everything. And that is good.
I got prematched in Texas where some people from my country and accepted. If I wouldn get a place in Texas I would accept the prematch from Barnabas, because I was also offered.
But now, it is really hard competence to get a spot, so there are great benefits there like H1 visa. I did not take my step 3, so I am in J1. But H1 visa is really good. So, with all my experience I would advise people really to consider Barnabas a good election, regarding of the past bad comments. I have realized that people keep commenting what was said on the past, but in actual fact reality is different. Nobody expects a to be a PGY1 in the paradise because all programs are very hard in the first year.
Finally, I know also that Barbanas is associated with Albert Einstein University and the teaching activities are increasing. When I went to my IV last year, was associated with Cornell University, but looks like Cornell did not do too much, so it is good the change.
There are basically Indians and Latins and some Europeans in the program, so is very open to anybody.
Good luck guys, and again, I recommend you first to know a program instead to accept the bad past reputation a hospital can have, because I experienced that. It is not all bad as was said before.

Good luck guys!!wink

hey gatita007
That was an awesome post, every line of it makes sense, all my confusion is gone now...thanks a lot.......good luck to you toosmiling face

grin You are welcome aimfor2008

Also, I would recommend to take the step 3 by sep-october, because it is when IV are done. I did not have step 3 by that time (just in Feb) but it is good to have step 3 so may aim for H1 visa. I can tell you know that many people talk about the benefits of H1 in comparison with J1, but I already made my choice to get J1.
So, guys, good luck in everything and just remember that is very hard to get a spot in US, long time to prepare for the steps, money investement in the exams, but I think at the end with some God help and our enthusiam you can get spot.
I would like to know after some of you guys go to St Barnabas for IV to post your experiences here, just to inform others that you have to see the program in person.

Good luck againwink
