To BBB: since you said you like to laugh - look at the University of Missouri-Columbia ObGyn Program requirements for FMGs:
You must be able to speak fluent Englishcool

That's cool - I qualify.smiling face smiling faceI wonder if they consider an accent (a cute one, according to the opposite gender evaluation) as being fluent or not being fluent in English. An American friend of mine, who has lived also in Europe, explained to me the difference in the thinking between Europe and USA when it comes to an accent. He thinks (and I strongly agree on this one) that in Europe if you speak a language with an accent people think: "How smart is this person, he/she has learned our language and is able to communicate with us in our language - that is an honor for us." Here in the USA (and I do not know what to think about this - I hope he is not right) - if you speak with an accent people think: "How stupid is this foreigner - he has an accent." shocked

Once upon a time, when I was not studying for the boards and had time to read, I read a book called "How the Garcia girls lost their accent" - it was a book about LOSS...

Well, on the bright side of things I can speak fluent English and can easily qualify for the University of Missouri-Columbia Program. cool Hey, University of Missouri-Columbia program, listen to me : I EVEN KNOW THE ENGLISH ALPHABET !!!smiling facesmiling facesmiling facesmiling face Isn't that super impressive!grin I think I will quickly re-write my personal statement and indicate as a first paragraph those two amazing achievements:
"Dearest Program Director, I am a Foreign Medical Doctor, who is not only intelligent enough to go to the most prestigious Medical School in his/her home country, to graduate from it with one of the highest GPAs, to publish first authorship papers in basic molecular biology and genetics, and to pass the USMLE board exams, but has also had the brain to learn English and even the English alphabet! I think you should strongly consider me above the rest of the Foreign Medical Graduates, because of the last two things. However, if you happen to come across the applications of all of my friends FMGs, whom I met during my years in the USA and who can also speak fluent Englishnodnod and I suspect they also know the English alphabetnodnod, than I guess you have to consider them as well. Because some of us might speak with an accent and might have not grown up on a farm with 100 cows, but we are still decent people, we are not terrorists and we do not endorse Osama bin Laden. Personally I even think that USA is the best country in the world, but if you watch the movie "Borat" they say there that Kazhstan is the best country in the world, so I got a little bit confused about itconfused, but anyway I strongly believe that your residency program is the best thing in the world after sliced bread, so please, give me a spot. I promise I will not disappoint you and I will work very hard, and I will take all the Holidays' calls always, because you know in my country we do not celebrate Thanksgiving and Labor Day, and Memorial Day, and even Christmas was not an official holiday during socialism, so I can take all the calls for all the American residents and I will never ever complain about it and I will even learn how to say the English alphabet backwards i.e. from Z to A, so please, give me a spot.smiling face I am highly trainable, better than a circus puddle doggrin And don't forget the fluent 'American' I can speak, you bet your boots!nodgrin"

What do you think about my new Personal Statement - do I stay on the message?

PS: I hope that all of you realize I am just joking. Just joking. It's a free country - freedom of speech and freedom of writing. In the real daily life I am a very politically correct person, I learned that the hard way. The above is just a joke. On the other hand, as a mean ex-friend of mine used to say - if it wasn't for the joke a lot of truth will be left unspoken. wink

Fluent can have an accent. After all, with my mother-in-law from England, she had a great accent and spoke fluently......

Love the PS. I'll let you know when I get your applications........

p.s. Isn't it circus "poodle" dog?grin
