I am an IMG following this forum closely .. first of all thanks guys for all great information.
I started step 2 ck prep starting last month and aiming to take exam sometime in dec.

My question is .. is it a good idea to take Step 2 ck first? I am getting these nightmare on may be this is a bad idea. Please send me your experiences and suggest me if this is a right thing to do ... I want to hear from both groups (people took step 1 first and also from people who tool step 2 first)

I appreciate your help on this - Thanks!

I would say step 1 helped me a lot. its almost the same topics over and over again. and if u dont have your basics right, you would have a difficult time reasoning out the correct answer. But like i always say U AND ONLY YOU know what is the best thing that works for you. if you are confident with step 2 material, why not?

Are there anyone who took step2 first and then step1 ... please post your experience ... appreciate it.

honestly , it doesnt matter which one u take first
for me , I got step 2 ck first and i had tha same nightmares u r having now
I ended up with 99/ 270 + nod

so dont worry , study hard , solve qs as much as u can ( 5000 qs are good idea ) and 99 will be in your pocket

It depends completely on your basic knowledge of medicine ,

Unfortunately some want to make a fixed manner for preparation , it doesnot work in that way.

If you are a fresh graduate and have a good basic knowledge of medicine , then there is no difference , you can go for step 1 or 2 .

But if you don't have a good basic knowledge of medicine , it is a must to start with step 1.

And be aware that step 1 is like a pain in the neck .It has more things to study and is somehow boring and dull.

I would say they are sequenced like that for a reason. Step 1 and then Step 2, the 2 comes after 1, why do people want to change it always??

I just think a lot of the material from step 1 you can use for step 2 and expand your knowledge a little bit afterwards and get a good score. Of course, there are people that do well on Step 2 first... but I still wonder, why do you want to make your lives more difficult than they already are?

I see it as a continous line where you put numbers on it, like a scale from 0 to 10. So, step 1 covers from 0 to 5, CK I am thinking covers from 4 to 9 and I would guess Step 3 covers from 7 to 10. Besides, if you take CK afterwards, you could start preparing for Step 3 right afterwards...

I am still confused as to why people like to invert things... I am sorry, but I just find it odd, and I must say I have been a rebel my whole life... but this one, I don't get! Good luck!!!

Do not agree woth above .

Yes it is step 1 and then step 2 but for AMG and not FMG .

How an AMG who hasn't done his/her clinical rotations can go and sit for step 2?

But we are talking about FMG that most if not all take both steps after graduation.

Yes step 1 helps but not that much , you're somehow exagerating it because even completely clinical books like CMDT has a lot of essential basic science stuff .

I agree that you need to know basic science and step 1 stuff(not the details which are tested in step 1 ,but the core concepts) to sit for step 2 CK however most if not all fresh graduates have enough knowledge to sit for steo 2 first.

And I believe step 2 Ck is easier for a fresh graduate than step 1 , so considering that you are inexperienced in the first shot , maybe starting with step 2 Ck is not a bad idea.

In most FM universities in contrast to US medical schools , the emphasis is mostly on clinical stuff so compared to US students FMGs do better in step2 and AMG do better in step 1 .

I got 99 in both steps (step 1 , 260+ and step 2 , 270+).Honestly I can say you can't compare these 2 with each other .Step 1 needs much greater effort and still you're still dubious about a lot of questions , in contrast step 2 is much cooler and easier .

Nightflight, we have totally different thinking processes and ways of seeing and doing things, I guess. Especially if you think Step 1 is more difficult, I would rather do the most difficult part first, and then go on with easier stuff having nailed down what is more difficult.

I got 95/229 on step 1 and more than one whole year after having taken it in May 2007, without studying Step 1 stuff again, I still remembered stuff from step 1, especially from Goljan's lectures, while going through UW for CK. It's unbelievable how much stuff he does say for Step 2, also from Micro and Pharm, the whole Behavioral Science/Psychiatry overlap, which almost lets you not study Psychiatry if your Step 1 stuff is fresh. Now, you could say you can revers this and study Psychiatry and then only scamming through Behavioral... sure!! But, I don't see many more things you can use for Step 1 from your CK, especially in Gyn, Surg, and even Peds/IM to an extent.

I think many things help you a lot for CK if you already know things from your Step 1 prep and just have to expand your knowledge, and it doesn't have anything to do with you being an AMG or FMG.

And I sustain that you can almost immediately take Step 3 after your CK, taking into account that you practice your CCS' and get used to the software. Many people taking Step 3 do study with CK notes!! So, in a way, it's even more efficient too, you are nearly nailing down two tests with 1 studying process!! Instead of going CK, back to the core Step 1, back to CK stuff and extend to Step 3... again, just what I think. Good Luck!

hi krist09; is very dificult to find a right answer for this Q, you are the only person how knows if you can do it. I have clinical experience, so step 2 is not that hard for my, there is a lot of stuff I have to review and learn how things are done in USA diferent to my country, but I fell more relax with this test. step 1 was very dificult for my, I did not remenber most of the things I saw in the medical school 10 years ago. I toke step 1 first bcz it is more dificult. good luck, just think better

Thanks elizabeth, hcm and nightlife, I am preparing for step 2 first because I am a fresh grad and I studied all step 2 topics in recent years, also I did not completely forget all basics (step 1).
My goal is to apply for 2009 matching so if I start doing step 1 which takes atleast 6-8 months for me, then I will be left with 2-3 months for step2 which might not be sufficient because I might not be able to recollect all my final years college subjects ... and also since step 1 is so much exhaustive I am not sure how much effort I can put on step 2 after step 1.
Your replies answered many questions that I have in my mind. Thanks guys!
