Which of the following structures would escape injury from syringe needle during injecting contrast medium into the subarachnoid space of lumbar cysterna in the Post. Middle line:

a) Dura matter
b) Interspinous lig.
c) Ligamentum flavium
d) Post Lingtiudinal Lig.
e) Supraspinous ligament
OK guys why the answer is not ligamentum flavium!!!!

its on the anterior side of the spinal canal...

also its IMPOSSIBLE to inject anything into the subARACHNOID space.. its the subdural space. the arachnoid is stuck to the brain and spinal cord like the peel is stuck to a potato... its only in the rare even of a ruptured aneurism that anything can come between the neuron and the arachnoid layer.... thats why on autopsy its darn hard to peel off the arachnoid...

if we can't inject anthing in the subarachnoid how they do lubar puncture there!!?
sorry if my question is Kinda stupid! I am just confused

  #4

Is not it the Pia that very closely attached to the brain and spianl cord!. If i am wrong someone please correct me.

answer is d

post longitudinal ligament

  #6

Yeah that's the correct answer But would you please tell me why?

  #7

cause posterior longitudinal ligament is on the back of the vertebral bodies so to pierce u must have injured the spinal cord.....remeber the vertebral body is anterior and the lamina directed posteriorly.....ligamintum flavum is running on the lamina so can be pierced

so things pierced in lumbar puncture r:

1-skin
2-sup fascia
3- deep fascia
4-interspinous ligament
5-ligamentum flavum
6- epidural space
7- dura
8- arachnoid
9- subarachnoid space

if u wanna do an epidural anaesthesia u will stop before the dura...epidural has a little risk of hypotension compared to spinal" subaracnoid anaesthesia"

hope this helps
