Hi,

Does anyone know that can we abandon the categorical IM after 1 year residency?
suppose I want to apply for Anesthesia/Radio and its very difficult to get into proper categoriacl program in these fields. Also to get into transitonnal is difficult. so the options are prlim-IM and prlim-Surgery.
So if I apply to categorical IM and quite it after 1 year......is it possible or violation of law?
or otherwise we have to continue categorical IM?

Any input higly appreciated.

Thanks.

Well, life throws you changes sometimes. But basically with the NRMP rules, you accept the Match that you get.
Just because it´s easier to get into this position and then quit is not right.
You know this before you apply, it´s not like that you changed your mind during residency.

It is legally possible but it is something that is frowned upon in the medical profession. Also, the PD of the program you apply to will ask why you applied to a 3 year program you didn't intend on staying in, and remember a lot of these PD's know each other.

Basically, switching after 1 year is legal but not something I would recommend...

If you quit after one year where do you intend to go?? If you match into a categorical-Med program, you cannot keep a hold on the advanced anesthesia/radio position.

I'm sure he/she meant that he would be applying to radio/anesthesia while doing 1st year of categorical med, basically going through the entire match process again...

Okay, you start a new program, work 2 months, ask for a LOR from your program director telling them that you matched into categorical, but you want prelim because your heart really isn't into Categorical.

Great. Then you want time off to interview, leaving your other interns to work harder so that you can have time off to interview. Even nicer.

Promise me you won't even apply to my program. Please.raised eyebrow
