In a tumor of the liver, the radiologist wants to visualize the vascularity of the tumor. He puts a catheter into the aorta through the femoral artery. Into which branch of the aorta should be dye be introduced?
A) Renal
B) Inferior mesenteric
C) Superior mesenteric
D) Celiac
E) Heptaic artery proper

That would get it to the portal vein, right? I am not sure either...I picked celiac because it gives off the direct supply to the liver parynchema.

  #5

Idiopathic i think your right about Celiac because femoral artery is a branch of external iliac, which is a branch of celiac.

wat i got frm d ques is dat catheter is put thru femoral a into the aorta to study the vascularity of a liver tm
it should be celiac bcoz it is a br of abd aorta n it gives off hepatic a which divides into rt n left hep brs dat supply rt & lt lobes of liver.
If tm is arising frm liver then these a r goin to supply bld to it too.

I asked a surgeon friend of mine, and he thinks the answer should be Hepatic artery proper. His reasoning is that celiac trunk comes off aorta further divides into splenic, left gastric and common hepatic. Common hepatic further gives hepatic artery proper then divides into right and left hepatic arteries which supply the area. He said if hepatic artery proper was not in the choices, then he would have picked celiac.

Iliac arteries actually come off the aorta, not the celiac.

oops, my mistake, thanx, dont know what i was thinking.

the q was "Into which branch of the aorta should be dye be introduced? " which should be direct branch so proper hepatic is not the right answer here you should take celiac trunk !!!

  #15

Very good point shrek, looks like we all didn't read the question carefully, it does say into which branch of the AORTA, has to be celiac then. Thanx for pointing it out.

Must be Hepatic artery because if you enter caeliac artery only, you will get the dye in to spleen, and all the anastamosis arround the stomach, which we dont need to, and also I havnt seen any hepatic angiograms with visible spleen and stomach, and also we use the other artery catheterization and angiogram as follows
1-Sup Mesenteric and caeliac artery cannulation to identify Upper GI bleeding

2-Inferior Mesenteric artery angiogram to see Lower GI bleeding

3- Renal angiogram for Trauma and tumour of the kidney

  #17

what is THE correct answer?

  #18

hiwa is right...i think we should all just agree on the hepatic artery proper as the final answer since it is the liver we want to visualise and not he spleen, stomach or duodenum...also it was my first guess

  #19

Strange question but in all honesty i see the hepatic artery proper as a distractor as the question, in a typical USMLE trick format seems only to be asking
"Which branch of the AORTA supplies the liver?"
Answer is of course the celiac trunk.

  #20

Well, it's gotta be the celiac trunk, since it's a direct branch of the aorta and it supplies the liver through one of its branches. -> aorta -> celiac trunk -> a.hepatica communis -> heptaic artery proper -> liver
Hope that helps.

hi everyone i already looked for this question in grey of anatomy and i think both answers of celiac and hepatic artries are correct and just want to remind u as it is written in the introduction of kaplan q book that sometimes they put questions in the exam as a trial for the next examinations to see how many students got it correct
