If you get into residency on J1, which is ECFMG sponsored, then is your visa stamped for 7 years or just 3 years (till your residency). I mean after 3 yrs of completing residency, if we were to start fellowship, will the fellowship be on the same ECFMG sponsored J1? (the remaining 4 yrs) Similarly, if we get in on h1 will it be sponsored for just 3 yrs (the duration of residency) or for full 6 yrs? its a bit confusing becasuse sponsor on h1 is the residency program and why will someone sponsor your after you have done residency with them??

j1 visa is sponsored usually for only one year. after that u can take extensions for upto seven years as long as u have a residency or fellowship. h1 can be one year or three years for residency. I am not sure what happens for fellowship. maybe someone else can elaborate

J1 is an annual visa - paperwork is renewed through ECFMG annually.
