Hi guys.I hav been goin through various prog websites and it seems to me that we shud apply for either Cat or Prelim if you want the full training to be in general surgery and that u apply for prelim if u intend to get 1-2 yrs of initial gen surgery training b4 pursuing a diff advanced training.Below r some exerpts from 2 prog sites regarding this. "Our program is of the categorical variety, hence we accept applications only from those who are interested in a full five year surgical residency". "Applications are accepted from categorical candidates wishing to complete the full five-year General Surgery residency, and from non-categorical candidates preparing for specialty training after the initial first and second years of training". What do u guys think?

I do not know if they want that, but I think it is better not to apply for both in the same hospital. others say no problem in that.

this is somewhat problematic if you were to apply for GS, bc the prelims often belong to the GS programs, which means it is going to be the same PD that review both your cat and prelim applications. This would clearly be a bad situation.

My understanding is- some progs allow you to apply to both and then their board of selection (not just the PD) decides if you would do better in their Cat or Prelim position. i think its just a way to get cheap labor - you have a skilled worker on temp job for one year in your clinic with the program haveing no obligations to further the person's carreer or education.
