This is about the visa you are expected to have right before you start residency... Some residencies accept ECFMG-sponsored J1 but do not sponsor it themselves... So, it is wrong to say that you should expect something from program... If you do not have green card, and you are not eligible for H1 visa, then you choose J1...

Thanks for ur reply justice..

what i am confused at is that my husband's green card is under process so i might be having that before i start residency .. also i m a Canadian immigrant and my passport is under process bcoz of which i can get TN visa ( on which i can work in US ) so i can have that too before startin g my residency ..

I am just confused which options to click at in t he profile section where it asks abt expected visa...

Are you cited as your husband dependant on his I-140 petition? If you are, then you will get your approval/GC as well. This should be taken care of by your attorney. You always can check status of your petition via USCIS website. Just see today which date is under consideration, and estimate your chances to get GC by April 2009, when you will need to sign a contract. If you husband filed a petition but did not put your name on it, then you are out of game and you can't rely on his GC...
TN is a visa of choice...

If you seek H1, check H1.... if you dont care J or H, click both... you need step 3 for H1 by the time of match. If your EAD/GC is pending, check that.

In your case; like justice said, if you are on I-140 petition or you expect your EAD by match/contract signing... you should check that.. if not H1 is better as then you can try to find a sponsor for GC once ina residency program or later. It is difficult to move to GC with J1 w/o waiver while still planning to continue training...

It's the same visa - H1 is just short for H1b visa.

Thank you very much bbb ! I was confused because ERAS has 3 separate boxes ..one for J1 , one for H1 and one for H1b . I guess I'll just choose them all if H1 and H1b are the same .
Thank you again !
