what is measured in amniotic fluid of an infant that reflects surfactant levels?

Lecithin:spingomyelin ratio
If >2:1 in amniotic fluid, it means mature levels of sufactant r present

Very good smiling face smiling face

yep..i meant that only

correct !

But if they give u all the three as choice ,then u would have to choose steroid as ur answer.

  #7

yeah, u cant give thyroxine to a preg female fr surfactant maturation..

good catch

I thought that other methods besides the lecithin:sphingomyelin ratio were favoured since the L:S ratio is a labour intensive method (using a manual TLC method after organic extraction). Furthermore, there is a relative lack of standardization.

  #10

Sakaki, i think L:S ratio will be the answer on usmle

  #11

Probably so, dxtxpx.

Can any tell me the other constituents of the'Surfactant"..

Pulmonary surfactant is a complex mixture of lipids and specific apoproteins:
80% phospholipid
8-10% neutral lipids
10-12% proteins

The phospholipid component consists of 60% saturated phosphatidylcholine (PC), 20% unsaturated PC and anionic phospholipids, phosphatidylglycerol (PG) and phosphatidylinosotol.

The main active component is dipalmityl phosphotidylcholine (DPPC) which is responsible for reducing surface tension and maintaining alveolar stability.

The protein part of the surfactant system is a small fraction of pulmonary surfactant and includes two major categories differing in structure and hydrophobicity.
