hello guys, I am new to this forum and need ur suggestions please. I took NBME 5..2wks before my step 1 exam (July 31st) and my score was 390...I studied more on my weak areas and took the exam feeling very good about it. On Aug 20th, another person who took exam with me had his score and he passed but my score was not available. I called ECFMG and they told me that they are looking into it and cant release it for now. Finally, talking to different managers in the dept., they released it yesterday and it was 151, 59...I mean this was a shock and I could not believe this. All of the performance bands were to the left with * in front of them meaning that it was even to the left than it appeared. I think that there must be a mistake and have sent forms for recheck. Logically, My score shd be b/w 172 and 179...as far as NBME is concerned. I am not worried that I failed ,but surprised at the score and performance bands which show my correct answers not more than 15%.... I had tums in my pocket during the exam and I put it in my mouth twice during exam....could that be taken seriously by the ecfmg? My prev NBME score 3 and 6 months ago were 380 and 320 respectively...do you guys think that my complete score is not registered? anyone please help me in understanding what happened here. I am lost and shocked. Booked for step 2 in October. I am in dillema now. Sabi

Your NBME scores indicate a failing or near failing score. I am not sure why they took so long releasing your scores though and I don't see any harm in asking them to recheck them. If you retest I would suggest you make at least a 450 on your NBME first.

NBME is a good predictor of usmle exam. It is time tested, no doubt about this. I think , you are no where near to pass exam. My advice , get rid off all paranoid ideas and work hard again. If possible take Kaplan classes , they will tell you where you are. Also remmember recently there is lot of changes in usmle exams due to large vol of applicant. So getting good score require a lot of hardwork. Are you fresh graduate ? If so take exam when u are ready. There is no shortcut and always be positive and move ahead.

guys, I understand that my NBME was not that great but my only concern is that I shd have been in the range of 70-79...and three digit of 178-190. and I got 59 and three digit score of 151..thats surprising. Thanks for suggestions though.

well first of all its ok not pass, but you should be sure that you are prepared before doin it because they will consider the trails you did to pass when you apply for a job, do it when you are ready
