Somebody, please help me apply for more than 1 specialty.I have a few questions 1).I want to apply for Anesthesia and Internal Medicine. Can I choose both the specialties in a same hospital? 2)Can I opt for both Preliminary and Categorical programs in Internal Medicine in the same program? 3).Also if I want to opt for another specialty which requires a preliminary year,is it worth applying?? Thanks in advance

my two cents.. 1. yes, you can. but not advisable. 2. yes, you can. advisable, coz it will be cheaper for you since you will just be paying once.. although i think you will have two interviews for such. 3. if you are really up for it.. why not! go for your dream! it's always worth the try.. Good luck!

But if we can apply in a few states only, then we have no other choice but to apply to both specialities in those states .I mean if we are interested in either speciality...

Same here. Can somebody give a reason why it is not advisable to apply to two specialties in the same hospital? Will the two program directors know and if yes, why would it be bad? Thank you, have been breaking my head over this for a week now, couldn´t find a real answer

Well, if in fact the programs share acme numbers and know you applied to two programs, I would think it may be bad: Think about it........lets take IM and FM for example,..or even IM and Psych: One of your personal statements will be talking about how you genuinely want to do IM,...while another will say you are genuinely interested in FM or Psych....it will pretty much suck the integrity out of your personal statement and in a way your whole application.... However, this is just my assumption.....perhaps its a bit paranoid to think that they will have the time to share applicant info amongst different departments....but if they actually do that I think it would be a disadvantage for them to know you applied to another specialty in the very same hospital.....which means one of them must be a "backup".....and I don't think any dept enjoys having being a backup choice Again,...this is just my 2 cents....

Further neither will actually know which is your backup program and so they may just both drop you..... but honestly with the thousands of applications I seriously doubt they share that info....but if they did it wouldn't look good at all for the applicant......(in my opinion)

Oh, I understand. I´m just wondering, if applicant info is confidential or if sharing of aamc ids is allowed. Well, good point though about the personal statements. Mmmmh, still unsure about it, that would mean I´d have to drop 11 programs out of my list.
