Wolff-Chaikoff effect is due to an excessive I intake, for example in patients cronically taking amiodarone. the excess of intracellular I will inhibit the expression of TPO --> I isn't combined with TG anymore --> decrease in T4 and T3  hypothyroidism.

eventually, there will be an "escape phenomenon", due to inhibition of the symporter which introduces Iodine into the cell  decrease of i.c. I  removes the block in TPO expression  increase of T4 and T3. (this happens after about 2 weeks of block).

simple explanation!:

excess iodide intake inhibits the iodide pump (which is responsible for intake of iodide into thyroid gland).. thus it inhibits thyroid hormone synthesis in a way. This is Wolf-C phenomenon.

But if you continue high doses of iodide over weeks, thyroid escape occur and patient gets hyperthyroidism.
