What is the initial step, in alternative pathway? Where do those C3b's come from in sterile person? :-)

Complement binding directly on polysaccharides of bacteria is the initial step. I believe C3b comes from spontaneous degradation of C3, but not exactly sure.

Yep... "it is called a "tick-over" hydrplysis of C3 and formation of C3i which binds Factor B, which then is cleaved by Fac D, to Bb... so you got now C3iBb... with same function as C3bBb.
