Hi all,
I am currently doing a clerkship and I have asked an attending to write me a letter but th attending told me that she;s sed it directly to ERAS. I may not apply in 1-2 years. What should I do. I have explained that to the attending. she said it's ok , I can email her when I am ready to apply.
I been reading a lot of pst regarding LOR but when it came to real life situation I am lost.
please help me with your generous advice
regards,
Angel

Well, it's hard to say what's best option here. If you plan to apply in 1-2 years, the LOR will be outdated (even by date) in any way. So, for the next season the same person can be contacted again (I don't see any problem with this), or you will have other people to write on your behalf.
Even if you have AAMC ID, the LOR submitted in this year will be discarded and will not be available for use in 2009.

The problem here is that, if that attending writes you a letter after two yrs, it might not be as good as it might be if written now.. So, talk to her, and make sure she prepares a letter for you now.. But the letter can be printed later with a fresh date.. . This is what one of my letter writers did and it worked out fine..

Dont take the letter from her (in a sealed envelope), 'cos, like Justice said, the letter would be outdated and you'd have to contact her again anyway..

Thanks guys. I did ask her to write it down and she agreed. I just dunno if it will be there in tw years. You think I should contact her again for a copy in hand or just wait till then !

A copy in hand wont help you since it is gonna be outdated in 2 yrs time.. Best would be to make sure that you have her contact info right.. Not just her e-mail id, if possible , also her phone no..

But, if u have not waived ur right to view, and if you're really concerned, explain this to her and she might give you a copy..
What my letter writer did was that he prepared the letter, signed it, (but did not date it) and gave it to some one in the division office and gave me her contact details.. It worked out fine for me..

I was also thinking about making a hard copy without date on the front page. It could be easily printed in when you decide to submit it to ERAS.
