Does anyone know the rationale for screening cholesterol?

The only thing I know

men>35, women>45 --> screen every 5 years
If risk factors (DM, FHx, CAD risk factors like smoking, HTN, CAD in FHx men<50, women<60) --> screen early

What I wanna know is
1. what screening test do you perform?
2. When do you go for fasting lipid study?
