Dear VKT,
Congratulations on your commendable performance and thanx for being so kind enough to share your experiences.I need to ask how did you prepare for Pharmacology?
1)Did you only read Lippincott's?
2)Which portion of Lippincott's Pahrmac. is Low Yield which you didn't bother reading,or you just read the book cover to cover?

I hope you take the time and answer my query on Pahrmac.Thanking you once again and all the best in preparing for the next stage.

Malaysian: I have only read Lippincott 2nd edition. ( not Millenium edition, I do not know additional drugs in there) And just before the exam I have read First Aid also (especially good in Toxicology+Antidotes). As First Aid is based on Lange Katzung, it is a very good complementation to people reading Lippincott. I have read Lippincott cover to cover. But pharmacology in exam is not very detailed and easy. There is nothing to worry about on that topic. Best of luck to you.

Hello, I am FMG like yourself from Iran, I am US citizen currently in US, I have the 2002 First Aid, 2002 Rypins Basic Science Reiew and Q and A, I have the High Yield Series, undergroung vignettes, most of the BRS books. I have time on my hands as my parents are supporting me, how much time should I put into preparing for the exam, is 6 months with 8 hours a day enough? Or should I delay my exam, should we study the small enzymes and dna stuff and small anatomic relations, or should we just be studying the general concepts, as we are all doctors, and I personally have not read the basic science in more than 7 years, what eslse should I buy to read, and what tips can you give me as Im very nervous of the exam, and I need a score similar to yours! I tried the usmle sites cd questions, and got 43 on the first bar, but I felt horrible about it, because I was nervous. Thanks

mogbehelli: If you have time, I would strongly suggest my list. You will be very strong reading these books. Best of luck.

perses: I do not know about other people, but I do think that First Aid is a must for people aiming good scores. Best of luck.

thanks for your help

george74mx: You have to contact with attendings who direct labs, using web pages. You have to convince them you are bright enough to do outstanding research in that specific area. It is hard. If you have prior works or papers, they are so valuable. Best of luck.

Hello VKT ,
I studied micro & immuno and answered the 2 tests ( each 50 Q ) from Kaplan Q-Bank 2001 , I scored 63 % . It was my first study . Is it satisfactory ?
By the way , I use Kaplan Notes 2001 and Kaplan Q-Book 2001 . Are they good ? Is it necessary to use 2004 print ? What is the difference inbetween ?

  #52

lucky: thanks so much. Hope you will get the score you want.

salehhero: I think your performance is good for the first try. To be honest I haven't read Kaplan stuff except Physiology Lecture Notes 2002(it was perfect), but I do not think that there is much difference between old and new books that can effect your outcome(this is my guess). Best wishes.

VTK I hope you can still spare time answering my questions there are lot of us who are really interested about your preparation. I already finished microbiology, anatomy and now I am reading behavioral science. I read behavioral science instead of other subjects because I think my brain was so saturated that I cannot absorb all the information that I am reading so I said. I want to give my brain a break but I just found out that behavioral science questions are so tricky. And I have to know it well so I can answer the questions. Everyday I'm becoming so frustrated especially after reading my book and just found out that I cannot remember anything and I cant even answer the questions. I don't have an examination date yet but my eligibility period is may-july. Do I still have time to read or do I have to change my exam date maybe by august. You know personally I dont want to suffer so long studying and I dont want to prolong my agony. Thank you for sharing your experience on the exam!

hi can you tell me how you went about reviewing?

  #55

elsa: I think it is a good move to pick the subjects which you like to study, when you feel exhausted studying of hard stuff. But at the end you will see that each major subject (Biochem, Beha. Science, Anatomy etc.) has very easy and very hard sections. So it does not generally matter a lot except pyschologically make you feel better, which is still important. So it is a good move.

Postponing is a sensitive issue, Postponing the exam is always harmful unless you really feel that you are not in mood of exam and studying at all. Otherwise, in more opinion postponing your exam will only put more stress on you, at the end you have to sit and study, this month or next month.

Final thought, be aware that most important period is last month. Even if you are a superstar one month before the exam, and you do not use your last month effectively, you will be dissappointed. Opposite is also true, even if you do not think that you are ready a month before, if you speed up and study effectively, you can ace the exam.

Best wishes
