Hi I want to know if you have a better chance if you are on H1 visa or on B1? I am a IMG in US on B1 currently. I have been offered a job at a hospital for research assistant. They will get H1 but I have to pay for everything. But due to the money involved and chances of fellowship later on H1, i am having to think and need your advice. Thanks and hope to hear from you soon

i think in visa category green card and citizenship helps in all of other cases u will need visa to sponsor.although ur research can benefit u in match but visa category other than green card or citizenship will not have effects

talk to a lawyer or councellor before you accept it especially if u plan to apply for the match and intend to transfer on a differant H1 later... its always best to talk to an expert on visa issues...

Thanks Innocent devil and Ganesha 123 I was planning to accept the offer and also spoke to a lawyer. He said it will have to be applied as a fresh H1 application for residency. The H1 for resarch job cannot be continued for residency. I dont know what the programs would want....or does H1 or B1 make any difference!

The H1B visa is for three yrs and can be extended to a maximum of 6yrs.. So, Do talk with your lawyer about your future plans on doing a fellowship.. 'cos if the time spent doing that research is included in that 6 yr period, you might not be able to get a fellowship on H1B.. e.g. say you do one yr of research, followed by 3 yrs of residency.. this leaves you with only 2 yrs left on your H1b and you wont be able to take a 3 yr fellowship on an H1b visa.. I'm not sure about this info.. please confirm with your attorney..

Yup I second hitesh.. I was told that H1 is for a maximum of 6 years... so if you have fellowship plans you need to confirm this before u accept H1. Also H1 per se may not help much with the Residency application but the research u do will.

Get H-1B without second thoughts. It gives you freedom to bring your family over without long waiting lists. Eventually you can also get green card if the same company or other company will sponsor you for it. But for an IMG or anyone who is non-US citizen or not a green card holder, H-1B is the best option.
