There was a LOTTTT of info really, spacially 'cos I'm doing neuroanatomy, but trying to summarize:
Neuroanatomy 7 points:
from Kaplan

1.- Vagus CN X: Mixed. Inervates palate muscles and pharynx muscles for swallowing except tensor veli palatini (V3) and Stylopharyngeus (IX).

2. Some hints for CN lesions:
  • CN XII injury: The tongue deviates towads affected side.
  • CN V3 injury: mandible towards the side of lesion
  • CN X injury: palate drops same side, but uvula points away the site of the lesion.

3. Cleft lip: maxilary prominence fails to fuse with the medial nasal prominence. Cleft palate:palatine shelves fail to fuse with each other.

4. Oculomotor Nerve CN III: Motor. Functions: Adduction (Medial rectus), Constricts pupil (Sphincter pupillae), Accommodates (ciliary muscle), Raises eyelid (levator palpebrae superioris).

5. CN VI is typically affected first in a cavernous sinus thrombosis or by an aneurysm of the internal carotid artery, because it courses through the middle of the sinus (all others in the lateral wall).

6.
  • Sensory innervation of nasopharynx: By V3 and IX
  • Sensory innervation of oropharynx: By IX
  • Sensory innervation of laryngopharynx: By X

7. CN XII: unnervates all tongue muscles ending in "glossus" except palatoglossus (X)

Ok Karime: 7:30 am......nod bad.........after running:

Paln: Study 1 hr Goljan, do 50 qs UW (without reading explanations), then 50 pages neuroanatomy, Will read the 50 explanations for yesterday and tday, and my 5 FA pages.

Lets see how it goes

hey karime... nice work... i leran ur 7 points everyday...a mnemonic I learnt in school:

CN 10 (VAGUS) AND CN 7 (FACIAL) : LESION... DEVIATION TO OPPOSITE SIDE...(uvula to opposite side and mouth to opposite side)

CN 12(HYPOGLOSSAL) AND CN 5(MANDIBULAR br) :LESION ... DEVIATION TO SAME SIDE..( TONGUE AND JAW)

SO 10 AND 7= 17 (OPPOSITE SIDE)
12 AND 5= 17 (SAME SIDE)

JUST A CRAZY MNEMONICgrinwinknod

GUD LUCK!

Thanks Pursuit!! grin

Nice.....now we can include CN VII

9:40 ok....lets start nod

I'm feeling tired.....shaking head..I need some energy....!!!....Neuroanatomy.....very interesting, but needs attention.....a lot...so just finished 40 pages Not read my UW explanations, scored 65% offline, but I think it's kind of misleading me 'cos I have fresh concepts when I'm doing the questions.....That's cheating!!!!

Thanks tia, by the way....awesome score...youre almost there nod

usmlekiller: I need to read a lot, a lot, a lot!! :rolleye:

pursuit: if you have more mnemonics don't hesitate to post please nod

Study??....Target?.....where are you girls?.....raised eyebrow sad

..................
Ok....Again...a lot of info ....but I'd like to remark this 7:
(from Kaplan)

1. Motoneurons: Alpha motoneurons innervate extrafusal fibers. Gamma motoneurons innervates contractile intrafusal muscle fibers of the muscle spindle

2. CSF: Normally clear, isotonic, pH 7.33. Compared with serum: CSF has less proteins, more Cl- and Mg+, But equals serum in Na, K, HCO3 and glucose. Can contain 0-4 lymphocytes or mononuclear/mm3.

3. Hydrocephalus. Noncommunicating: caused by obstruction to CSF flow inside the ventricular system. Communicating: oversecretion or reduced absortion of CSF.

4 . Important muscle stretch reflexes to test are: knee (L2-L4), Ankle (S1), Biceps (C5-C6), Triceps (C7-C8)

5. Upper motor neuron lesion: Spastic paralysis, hyperreflexia, Babinski (+), Increased muscle tone, muscle weakness, disuse atrophy of muscles, decreased speed of voluntary movements, large area of the body involved. Deficits are contralateral or ipsilateral and below the lesion.

6. Lower motor neuron lesion: Flaccid paralysis, areflexia, NO Babinski, fasciculations, decreased muscle tone, atrophy of muscle, loss of voluntary movements, small area of body affected. Deficits are ipsilateral and at he level of lesion.

7. Substantia negra derives from basal plate

.......

Tomorrow .....another opportunity.....stay POSITIVE
