I 've been thinking about these combined programs like IM/Psych, IM/Neuro, IM/EM etc etc.. and couldnt get a lot of info.. So, anyone who knows more about these , please share here.. Please also try to answer the following :

1. Are these relatively easier or more difficult to get in to than IM / FM / Paed alone..
2. Are any of these what we call "IMG freindly" ?
3. What are the job/fellowship prospects after you finish such programs?

Pls do share any more relevant info that you can think of.. Thank you!
PS: i know this sounds kinda vague, but thats how it is in my head right now..

These combined progs are longer. As far as fellowships go, you'll have to pick a field in one of those 2 fields. So, if you're interested in pursuing a fellowship, you may as well do a solo specialization.

Of course, those who do the combo progs have their reasons. And they're not jobless or anything.

I believe that combined programs are in fact More Competitive.....if you ever compare the number of imgs in the categorical vs combined programs, you will find that there are very few to zero imgs in the combined prgrams, while there may be a number of them in the categorical program at the same hospital.

@ paheli : yea, that does make sense.. i am planning to pusue a fellowhip later on. But some of these program combinations look so attractive, that they almost make me drool..lol grin e.g. IM + Critical Care, IM+ EM, IM + EM + Critical Careshocked, IM+ Neuro... !!! And it also makes me wonder that if I do IM+Critical Care, would it make a Pulmonary and critical care fellowship easier for me to get ?!

@akm: The thing is all these programs are new.. Infact, some of these havent had any grdauates yet.. So, the low no of IMGs could be because of the reason that IMGs show less interest in these.. I'm not sure if the numbers for these are very reliable (in terms of making a judgement)

hitesh, for such info, you should try and contact someone you know who is currently in a combo residency. Ask them how they feel about their prospects now that they're in the prog. All the best.

akm, I think IMGs may not be numerous in the combs progs due to some level of lack of knowledge. As we know, majority of IMGs go the IM way, with FM, Peds following. Given a few years more, it may become more mainstream and acceptable, and you can be sure IMGs will add to the competition!

@akm

i dono agree with u,,reason for less no of imgs r tht not many imgs apply for combined programme.if u just conduct a poll.see how many apply for combined programme

Unfortunately there is no real way to assess whether the combined program is "more" or "less" competitive......this entire conversation is based on assumption..."I think less people apply, or less people know about them"....On the other hand combined directors want people who have the ability to get board certified in 2 entirely different specialties in a limited time.....In the end i guess you'll just have to go with what you think.....I think that in general they are more competitive....It doesn't really matter what we think anyhow.....One should apply to specialties based on what they want to do.....and in a matter of fact I am applying to few combined programs as well (there are very few of them by the way.....)

Good luck

akm: that is true, It does not matter what we think.. Infact, i want to know what the residents of such programs feel about those..

innocent devil : How does your friend like the med / peds program.. What does he/she say about it?

PS: yea, it wasnt a good poll.. deleted it..
