I don't know what to do to pass this exam. I worked with USMLEWORLD, did half of the questions and averaged 52 percent on them. I am a slow reader, so I did not work by reading Kaplan first and then doing WORLD. I would do the WORLD questions, and then take notes on the incorrect choices and review those topics from Kaplan. And then I reviewed the notes from WORLD. The day of the exam, I was getting mostly peds questions. They seemed straightforward, and I answered every question to the best of my ability. Only to realize three weeks later that again, all of my efforts were in vain. Reading all of you people getting 99s on here, I feel sometimes like a poor man trying to get into a rich people's club or society, and I wonder if all of this is worth it. I passed my Step 1 on my fifth attempt, with a score of 187/76, and I have a second attempt at the CS coming up in October, which I am trying to focus on. Residency, honestly, is the last thing on my mind, even though I am still in the process of contacting people about LORs for the 2009 match (trying for radiology and pathology). Honestly, I just don't have a clue as to what to do with the goddamn CK, and now that I think about it, it makes me angry and annoyed. I read on here about people thinking they failed when they take the exam, then three weeks later their score comes back as a 99. What a shame, to have wasted 700 plus dollars of my parents' money on 9 hours of work, all for naught.

Sorry to hear that my friend! I don´t know what else to say, I wish there was a perfect recipe here, that I could give you to pass the exam, but I´m afraid there isn´t. You have to keep trying and you sound like a person with a lot of stamina! So good luck!

acadm Key to success is to face reality and be honest with your self..First you have to admit that you have isssues and you should work on it, be honest with your self and see what went wrong and try to avoid it...Every body is different, you can hear a friend of yours saying that he passed CK with just one month studying, that was HIM not You...Preparing for the USMLE is painful as far as I can feel, needs hard work and doing it THE RIGHT WAY, not YOUR OWN WAY..."The rich people club" and the poor man image in your mind is nothing but your immagination...and if it is true peopel got into this club with nothing but hard work and persistence...you have to admit that you have no basic knowldge for the simple reason that you did not read any text before doing Qs..Slow reader? take more time, very simple....You need the base information (Text) and then you need to learn how to use this base and apply it in a clincal scenario (Qs)... People I know who got 99s worked really hard, read Kaplan 2-3 times and did UW more than once in addition to FA or Crush....They are not better than you...Do what they do, learn the concepts, and certainly you will be an honored member of the "Rich people's club"

know yourself more. the problem lies in your persona. if you get to the root of it you will know what to do. if you feel you don't know whats happening then you are in deep trouble. that realization and trouble-shooting is something that will help you not just in your USMLE, but your whole career. because USMLE is not an end. even if you clear USMLE in 'n' # of attempts, there is worse afterwards. i might seem harsh, but you really have to delve into yourself.

"Slow reader? take more time, very simple....You need the base information (Text) and then you need to learn how to use this base and apply it in a clincal scenario (Qs)" thank you for this analysis, angeles; on another note, is it wise to reapply for the CK, in an attempt to match in 2009, or should I postpone the CK until I'm getting 65 percent or better on UW and a comparable score in the NBME?

well, I really hate discouraging comments like " Are you serious with your life ? " . Dude , USMLE is not a measure of your talents or creativity, a lot of " Barely made it in medical school " pass with 99 and very smart students fail twice and trice, etc. It has a lot to do with luck and the way you study. Don't study to learn...Study to pass. ( i hate to say ) I'm one of the people who suck in standardized tests because of over-analyzing the questions and Anxiety problems. Yet i didn't do any exam yet..but i think scoring 99 is the best way to wipe the failed attempts. ALL RESPECT TO ENCOURAGING MEMBERS ..VERY MATURE ATTITUDE

There is always a set of things that will be asked or the so called high yield plus a lot of must know stuff. I think to get them right at any cost is the key to passing. Then build on the rest for a better and better score. learn , recollect and practise. Exams are not a measure of clinical expertise or how good a clinician you will become , is my personal opinion. Goodluck !! If residency is your big dream, consider all the money and time as an investment inyour future !!
