No, bbb was out of the office for a couple of days - and I don't always have the answer ::very_confused:: I don't have any knowledge of what OB/GYN programs look for in a candidate. Scour the internet for application criteria for the programs, make some calls, study your tuchus off and knock the USMLE's dead. Hubby needs to be with your dreams 100% - and let you have your dedicated study time.... Best of luck

thanx dear bbb for your replay .i am so happy that you answerd me . acctuly i did not mean that i am looking for OBGYN program . i was just trying to ask if i still have a chance to start any residency program after i will pass the steps . as i graduated on 1998 and i was in obgyn but i left it on 2002 .which means i have gap from 2002 till 2005 .(till i will clear the exams ) on 2003 i did regular volunteering job at the hospital like taking files from department to another ...then i worked as a volunteer at doctor clinic . now i am looking for observership . after all the above do you think i will have a chance to get residency job in 2005? or it will be too late for me because of my old graduate date and because i am in 30s now? my seconed q: it is possible to ask for observership for only 6-9 hours a week as i need to save hours for studyiing ? thank you dear bbb your posts always are great help for me

First - an oberservship position will put you in the hospital on the same schedule as an intern or medical student - full time, maybe even some nights. It's not impossible to get a residency in your 30's. And at least the gap is only from 2002! Again - study!!! (And have hubby take you out to dinner more - or cook for you!)

Unfortunately, I can't help you with ideas for getting into a research position - clinically, they don't really help in the eyes of my program director. A volunteer, even just a couple hours a week would be better. But it won't get the letters that research might get. Gee, I really didn't answer, did I?

Volunteer in a clinical setting is better than research. But research will get better letters. What's for dinner?

Could you explain more about volunteer? What do you mean explain? It's a non-paid, volunteer position at a hospital - I'm not certain what you mean... :?:

propebly the question is about how being volunteer in a hospital or clinical setting? but dear bbb what if i applied for volunteering job at clinical setting but they did not let me be an ovserver ..only doing regular work (files . answering phone ....) does it still named experience for my usmle resume? or then it would be better for me to apply for research job ? p.s: fish was great yesterday . but what to order today for dinner at the resturant?

You would at least get letters of recommendation, and who knows, the head research guru that you are working under might know someone that would let you observe rounds with them. You never know..... And - dinner tonight will be Thai at my home - Pad Thai with shrimp. Or a botana at the Mexican place. Or that potato/onion curry at the Indian place. Could be Korean too!! Or popcorn.

Hey UMASS and bbb, You guys are great, really I mean it.Reading your topic made me realise that everyone has their own set of problems and that encourages me not to Quit whatever the problem maybe. I am in Canada and I jsut passed the Evaluating Exam here, but the problem is the % of IMGs who get accepted here is only 10% so here i am starting anew, now considering USMLE but it is still a long way to go,I am scared that I wont be able to make it.Plus you know the long wait of 2 yrs before I finally do get in,is really disappointing. I never knew that I have to finish all the exams before March in oreder to apply for that year residency.I hope bbb you have any suggestions as to what I should do now. Thanks for your help.I would really appreciate any kind of advise that you can give me.

I didn't even realize that Canada would take IMG's - the few persons that we have had from international schools were only in Canada temporarily. Advice - study hard :icon_study: and best of luck, eh? Oh, and eat poutine if you can stomach it......(I sure couldn't). :icon_heh:

Hi BBB, Thanks alot, for taking the time out to help me. I sure am gonna work hard and hopefully I will be able to get some decent scores. Anyways can you suggest what I should be planning on doing after I finish with my exams, most probably by May 2005.Cause I would still have quite a lot of time at my disposal, and I am at present dreming of becoming a Dermatologist. And I sure would do anything in that 1 year period that would increase the chances of my getting into Dermatology. Someone suggested that I do Masters in Public Health,I am not sure whether that is gonna help.I know about the Externship and Research work that I can do,but is MPH more helpful than those.Frankly what are the chances of an IMG getting Dermatology??? And ya I have to convince my hubby to let me try that stuff. Have A Nice Day
