I'm silent observer of this community and it helped me a lot throughout my preparation. Thanks to each and every one of this community for sharing their preparation strategies. Now it's my turn to share my exam experience with you all!!

My exam was June 19th at Houston (morning Session). After the exam I had a mixed feeling and I was not sure of the result. But one thing I can say is Practice..practice...practice and practice and you can get through the exam. I practised all FA cases and USMLE world cases twice with my sister, fortunately she is also a doctorsmiling face. Though practised I done many mistakes which includes

I forgot to shake hands with three patients,

I couldn't close two counters and forgot to counsel one patient with high risk sexual behavior and other with alcoholism,

Partial neuro exam for all the cases that required neuro exam,

Forgot to examine oral cavity in one case where it is required,

Forgot Ophthalmoscopy in couple of patients,

Intentionally avoided Dix Hallpike Maneuvre in a case of Dizziness but mentioned in dignostic work up,

Examined lungs and heart with gownsticking out tongue, patient was laughing but I couldn't catch hersmiling face

Things that might hav helped me:

Knocked door in every case, greeted, shaked hands though forgot in few, asked about their comfortability in the room, asked permission to note some points,

Draped every case as soon as wishing patient,

Showed empathy where ever required,

Used paraphrasing through out the encounter,

Cool smile on facesmiling face,

Washed hands in every case,

Asked for any questions or concerns,

Asked permission before starting Physical examinationand kept talking throughout Physical examination,

Summarized history and findings in every case,

Counselled and asked for any help from my side,

Closed 9 counters completely.

Coming to patient notes, I got good hand writing and I think it helped me a lot though I didn't practise it extensively. My suggestion is write a breif patient notes with pertinent positive findings and few negative findings. Write whatever you do in Physical examination and once again you need not fill all the five columns in differential diagnosis with irrelevant things... may be three or four, they shoud be relevant to your cheif complaint.

Take a xerox copy of sample patient notes from FA and practise writing notes within 9 minutes.

My preparation time was 1 month daily for 4 to 5 hours and I'd suggest FA and if time permits go through USMLE world. Utilise web resources like CS blog by Digital doc; it is really helpful. For physical examination part USMLE world clippings are sufficient.

Bottom line is never go to exam without adequate practice....... Practice helps you to manage time which is the biggest enemy of the exam!!

Congrats to all the examinees who cleared the examsmiling face and good luck to those who are nearing their examcool!!

Any queries invited!!
