As I was going through the IV resources, I often heard the same remark repeated.

Do PDs really form their opinion of you in the first 60 second of conversation?

Does anyone know?

Well, you would probably be able to do the same - to make a conclusion about conversation skills, English fluency, overall preparedness to interview... however, we are to remember that applicants are also interviewed by at least one another faculty member, so PD's 1st 60-sec-opinion isn't the end of the story...grin Just a half of it...

I think it all depends on their temperament, background, maturity, assertiveness... You know, some people are very good character judges, and figure the others out very quickly. Some are not that good on doing it, but they think they are. Some wait a little longer to pass a judgement. Some go with their gut feeling. Some have a lot of opinions based in past experiences (then you have to be lucky and don't bring back the bad memories, only the good). So... no magical formula here. And I agree with Justice. Hopefully it will be a decision made by many, not only one person. Because one may be really nervous during those first 60 seconds, especially if the PD looks intimidating (remember, WE are going to be forming an opinion about them, as well!). nod

oh yes you can form your opinion about somebody even before s/he opens his/her mouth. so appearances count a lot. make sure you are well dressed. nice hair cut, nice make-up and stuff. at least, score high on that and look presentable. first impressions count a lot. invest in a nice outfit. so if you look good they will hope you will sound good too. by the way, when you look good, you feel good and you are likely to talk 'good'.
