what is the Hering Breuer reflex?
what is the relationship between this reflex and streching receptors from lungs?
tx.

  #2

stretch receptors in smooth muscles of airways when stimulated by distention of lungs produce a reflex decrease in breathing frequency

Isn't hering breuer the same thing as the J reflex, which has CN10 innervation?

If so, in cases like pulm. edema or when a foreign body is found in the resp tract, these receptors get activated causing dyspnea.

Mani is right; they are different things but what i want to know is which resp. center is stimulated or inhibited by the impulses from stretching rec.
the result is short inspiration and decreased resp. rate?

  #6

its the decresed resp rate not shallow breathing. its the usual medullay and pontine resp centres that act in conjunction to regulate resp rate.

Lung stretch receptors

are located in the smooth muscle of the airways.
When these receptors are stimulated by distention of the lung, they produce a reflex decrease in breathing frequency(Hering Breuer reflex).
