Transformation is basically uptake of naked DNA from the environment by competent cells. Competent cells are those that are able to bind short pieces of DNA to the envelope and import them into the cell. These cells become competent under certian environmental conditions. A dead cell can release its DNA to a competent cell which will bind it. This DNA has to be stabalized in the new cell because if its not, it can become the target of exonucleases, therefore, it must go through the process of homologous recombination which stabalizes the genes. A new cell has now been made.
Production of capsulated strep pneum from a non encapsulated strep is an example of transformation. Hope this helps smiling face
