whats the difference between categorial and pediatrics(categorial)?
and also what the difference between normal pediatrics n community pediatrics?

many programs have different tracks for peds, which differ primarily in the rotation schedule and duration as approved by the board...these include categorical (which is the normal 3 year peds training...no difference between categorical and peds categorical if both are peds); primary care (aims at giving residents a more gen peds coverage so few mnth less of subspeciality more clinic); community peds (not sure but very similar to primary care. they have a bit more of advocacy too); research track/physician scientist track which usually is a 5 year program unlike the other 3 yr prog where u do a 2 year clinic residency followed by a 3 year research training; lastly of course there are the combined prog like med peds/peds-EM/peds-genetics
all in all the categorical and primary track actually end up with lots of overlap...but when i applied i didnt really think so and felt community care wouldnt be as academic and didnt apply to any primary care prog...but especially in reputed programs it makes no difference and i think ppl should apply to both (however if ONLY primary care exists, then obviously that hospital is a community hosp and u might have some issues getting fellowship later just cause ur residency was so directed to community care)

Thanks a lot, mukho. So, how can you tell the diff, regarding which kind of a prog it is? I've only seen the Uni-based, Comm based-Uni affil and Comm progs classification. Nothing like primary care and community peds etc. [ as you said, they do sound very similar and confusing]
