Hi Everybody,

I found Biochem chapter in new FA to be pretty long but still not aslong as most of the rview books. Do you think FA may be enough for step1? Anybody tried to read Biochem only from First Aid?

How about FA-Microbiology?

I won't ask if its enough, coz i know its not.

But is it substantial? What % would you give it compared to the required syllabus?

i used FA for biochem as a general guideline, and read the corresponding chapters in either lippincott or kaplan. but i didnt use FA alone, and i definitely didnt think it was enough. so please dont use it alone for biochem!!

for micro, i actually did use FA alone, but i had a notes inserted into the margins from various sources. i used FA because i really didnt like kaplan's micro notes...FA helped consolidate the material and helped me remember all the details, like all lactose fermenting/non-fermenting bacteria, DNA viruses, RNA viruse, etc. this is because FA arranges everything in groups, lists, and tables that helped me keep track of all the details that u have to know.

read kaplan first if you're not comfortable with FA for micro alone, but definitely read the FA section of micro, it will help you consolidate the subject.

for micro it is a great guide.

the best part is phrama.. I believe it covers 90-95% of the exam if you do it with usmleworld questions and use kaplan as a refrence

You wont understand any of the figures in FA biochem, If you study only FA...3 - 4 pathways are combined in just one figure in FA, and it makes sense to people who has at least once did all the individual pathways in detail from kaplan..I will suggest you to listen to the biochem lectures when you study kaplan biochem, it will make biochem much easier to understand, otherwise biochem will be boring and difficult to understand...after you are thorough with biochem i can guarantee how good you feel wen you are doing pathology, it makes patho a lot easier to understand.

Regarding micro FA...pls study all the contents given in tables from kaplan Microbio + the lab techniques + microbial genetics + HIV + CLINICAL MICROBIO from kaplan( the last 2 chapters)...UW qs for microbio is a must if your are going to study only these from kaplan and and u can study the rest from FA
Immunology ...pls read kaplan, FA is not a short cut for immuno...

i agree with most people here..
if u have a good understanding and read quick u can really skip the videos for biochem..
kaplan i feel is a must.. gives u a bsic understanding and first aid just puts the stress on the important points..
but its not enough.. definetely.. do both .. i did not do lippincott at all. and u have to do kaplan and first aid anyways.. so a third book wud be more of a hassle!! goood luck!! smiling face
