Ho do I "finalize" LoR?
And what does it mean exactly?
Haven´t sent them to ecfmg yet. Will they just appear? And if not, how will they come online?
Confused about this, please helpconfused
Thanks!

Finalizing means making a PERMANENT record in your ERAS appl about the LOR writer, his title and affiliations, and which specialties his letter is intended for (let's say IM and IM/peds). After you finalized it, you cannot delete it or change it. The only two actions that is allowed after the LOR was finalized is to use it or not to use it.

Previous year this feature did not exist. My understanding is that ECFMG can attach your scanned LOR to you application right away if you have the finalized record. If you don't have it, it will be dumped into archive and uploaded to your files later, when you a) make the finalized record; b) apply for residency. It will take some time.

Bottom line and advice: finalize your LOR records as soon as possible because nothing stops you from that.

@Justice:

So it is better to make sure first that ECFMG has already recieved the letters before finalizing?

Thanks

I would say the opposite: finalize it before sending stuff to ECFMG. Because you know what you are gonna send, don't you?

Hey thanks for the advice!
Very much appreciated. Two more questions:
So I assign a letter writer, etc.
What if a letter is not received or scanned by ecfmg at all? Then I have it finalized but the letter never appears. Can I then still delete the "finalized letter"?
What if they are not scanned on time? I mean, I can only apply to the programs if all my LoR that I wanted to, appear in ERAS, right?
Thanks!

Well, you can see if the LOR was scanned by looking at document verification of your ECFMG account. If it was scanned, it will be attached to your application and received by the program. 100% guarantee...

If you don't see LOR in your ECFMG portfolio, but know that you sent it, you still send it, and the ECFMG/ERAS will automatically update programs by sending them the "missing" piece, whatever it is - LOR. MSPE, etc... Technically, you apply only with tittles of what you want to send... ECFMG sends it for you...

Again, finalize LOR before sending it. This will help you feel safe...

After all this detailed answer, I still have a question. rolling eyes
In DSF I wrote "All specialties" near each of my LORs.
So, in ERAS, when assigning LORs before finalizing, should I also write "All specialties"?

Thank you.

yes i think so

So I finalized all my 4 LORs in ERAS.
Does that mean that soon they're going to appear in "My Documents" in the PostOffice?
Cause it says that my MSPE and Transcript are there already.

And in the end... do we ever get to see our uploaded files? [I dunno, just to make sure it's our stuff, just being paranoid here... I guess....]
sticking out tongue
Thank for bearing with me guys...

No, it does not mean that finalizing LORs entitles you to see sooner than they are processed, verified, scanned, uploaded to archive/bank (you name it)... There is a wait line : first come first served (scanned)

You will never see your scanned docs... For paranoia - take Prozac / stop taking Prozac... You wouldn't probably mind to get my LORs...

Later, when you apply to programs, you can see in ADTS what is available to programs...

Thanks one more time. Prozac...hehe...

And I didn't mean that I'm entitled to see them sooner, just eventually...confused

Well, of course you will everything you sent... Why to worry about that if you already have experience with your MSPE???!!!???

Hi,
what do I write in Specialties that LoR is assigned for? I want it for all specialties that I´m gonna apply for. Do I write the word "All" or the specialties themselves?
Thanks!

  #18

Does anybody know this?

  #19

write all specialties

Hey guys !

I finalized all my LORs a while ago.. even before sending them..

One of my LORs was sent but has not arrived yet..

Should I apply now ? or should I wait until it is received and scanned ?

Thanks a lot.
